Your Deal Dollars: PopCap games
It's been awhile since the Xbox Live Marketplace has featured such a bountiful Deal of the Week, but thankfully the puzzle kings at PopCap have delivered an attractive suite of games at rock-bottom prices (see the full list on Major Nelson's blog). Even though almost every one of the eight games (and a single expansion pack) are well worth their new prices, we know that shelling out nearly $40 for the entire collection is out of many consumers' price range. With that in mind, we've whipped together this handy guide to finding the deal that's right for you.
NOT FOR:
Even though this is a pretty comprehensive selection of the company's Xbox output, one PopCap game is absent. Their collaboration with Square Enix, Gyromancer, is still full price, likely due to the fact that PopCap didn't handle publishing duties on that game. Beyond that, everything that PopCap has made is included, so the only folks who should steer clear of these deals are puzzle game-phobes.
BEST BANG FOR THE SPACEBUCK:
If you're looking for the best game for the price, pick up Peggle for 400 points ($5). It earned an 89 on Metacritic - the same score as Plants vs. Zombies, but it's selling for $2.50 less than that game. Said $2.50 could then be put towards the Peggle Nights DLC that also notched high Metacritic marks. Plus, we'll never get tired of the "level clear" song.
FOR MODERNISTS:
This is refreshing - two PopCap games that have released over the last year are included in this week's deal. Bejeweled Blitz Live came out in February while Plants vs. Zombies released last fall. While BBL is newer than (and 1/3 of the price of) PvZ, the fact that PopCap squeezed more console-exclusive features into the latter makes us recommend that game more for gamers looking for something shiny and new.
FOR THRIFTY 360 OWNERS:
It may not be the most popular game of the bunch with a 68 Metacritic average, but at 200 Microsoft Points ($2.50), Bejewled Blitz Live is among the cheapest games in this week's lineup. The other 200-pointers, Zuma and Feeding Frenzy, are only 50% off, though, while BBL has the biggest price cut of the week at 75% off. Plus, it's at a price that's competitive with PopCap's iPhone game prices for once!
THE ACHIEVEMENT-SEEKER'S CHOICE:
PopCap is not one to dole out Achievement points with reckless abandon - in fact, Bejewled 2 is amongst the 13 most difficult games to earn Achievements in, earning a 10/10 difficulty ranking on Achieve360Points.com, standing alongside heavy hitters like Final Fantasy XI and Dead or Alive Xtreme 2. In fact, none of the site's 37,000+ members have earned all 200 Achievement points! Going into any of these games expecting to earn an easy 200 is foolhardy, but your best opportunity would probably be to pick up Feeding Frenzy, which earns a much more manageable 6/10 difficulty level on the site.
