When you’re tired of the included clips, you can buy extra DLC clips for $2 each. (They come in discounted bundles, too.)

Last spring’s Yoostar 2: In the Movies put players into classic film clips via the Kinect camera, and follow-up Yoostar on MTV serves up a similar feat, albeit with very different source material. Included in this budget-priced release are 70 scenes from the cable stalwart’s diverse lineup —everything from Jersey Shore and The Real World to The State and Teen Wolf — along with 10 clips pulled from music videos by the likes of Lady Gaga and Snoop Dogg.

Though the content has changed, the core experience hasn’t: playing Yoostar still involves reading/singing lines and mugging for the camera, and then watching the completed clip with you (and a friend in some scenes) subbed in for the real-life actor, artist, or reality star. You can upload completed videos online and even share them via social-networking sites.

It’s an amusing diversion, but the game can’t complete the illusion, as our images always appeared pixelated and surrounded by chunky borders, even after we swapped rooms and lighting conditions. And you can play only single clips here: Yoostar 2’s lightweight challenge mode is gone, making this MTV version feel like even less of a game. But the bigger drag is how many clips spotlight uneventful reality-show conversations that are hopelessly dull without context and seem like filler.

As clever as its core concept is, the Yoostar series still struggles to be more than a half-baked party trick — and it’s one that’s losing appeal with each lackluster performance.
