Wolf of the Battlefield: Commando 3
Wolf of the Battlefield: Commando 3 has all the macho terminology we destruction-obsessed gamers want to hear, and we're happy to report that those aren't empty words. This three-player scrolling shooter has that old-school, spray-and-slay mojo that your inner rageaholic craves.

Dropping special operatives Wolf, Coyote, and Fox into a hostile environment, Commando 3 takes a lot of cues from Capcom's 1990 coin-op Mercs. Is it a sequel? A reinvention? The answer is yes. Commando 3 incorporates Mercs' turreted jeeps, destructible evironments, drivable vehicles, massive tank boss battles, and power-up icons, then updates everything for a more lush presentation on Xbox 360. The cartoony art style echoes Team Fortress 2: thick outlines, clean basic colors, and machine gunners with huge barrel chests and tiny spindly legs. The soundtrack comes right out of an A-Team episode, and with every hit you take, a string of punctuation-mark obscenities pops up over your character's head. Clearly, all this killing is just good clean fun.

We found multiplayer tough on the second of four difficulty levels, and even the easiest setting proved challenging as a solo soldier. Until you beat the game once, you can't restart the game at a later level. And some stuff wasn't up to the military snuff: grenades and cars are tricky to steer, some power-ups didn't know they'd been collected, and enemies that spawn from solid walls is a dirty trick.

As a bonus, Commando 3 comes with access to this summer's Super Street Fighter II Turbo HD Remix beta test, but this game has enough charms to warrant a purchase on its own.
On Xbox Live Arcade
+ Delivers both parts of the phrase "power fantasy."
+ Super Street Fighter II Turbo HD Remix comes gratis.
- Gotta restart from the beginning until you beat it.
? Why is Capcom obsessed with long game names?

I have yet to complete the game but so far I have found it to be quite boring. I've made it to the last boss but died before I was able to defeat him, but the whole time I was playing I just kept thinking "Why am I not having more fun?". There are far too many better dual-stick shooters available on XBLA right now. Get any one of those before paying for this.Fortunately I was able to obtain a download code for the game so I didn't waste any of my precious space bucks on Wolf of the Battlefield: Commando 3.
