Square Enix trademarks Hitman: Profession

The Hitman franchise has always been a fairly popular one. Though there hasn’t been a new entry in the series in more than five years, IO Interactive is working on a new title, Hitman: Absolution, for 2012. That’s the good news. The better news is that Square Enix may also be developing another Hitman video game right now as well. According to a trademark filing found by Siliconera, Square Enix Europe has locked down the name Hitman: Profession for the franchise. Though the trademark could be for any number of entertainment property possibilities, this isn’t the first time rumors of another Hitman video game have been heard.
Late last year, it was revealed that Sqaure Enix’s new Montreal studio would be working on a Hitman video game, in addition to the IO developed Absolution. While little was said beyond that, Eurogamer reported that the Montreal studio’s Hitman title would be for next generation consoles. Of course, IO will still assist in the development of this potential new Hitman game, as Square doesn’t want to take the Hitman franchise away from them completely.
Even though it appears that Hitman: Profession is set to debut on next generation consoles, we likely won’t have to wait much longer for confirmation. With all three console developers set to show off their next generation of consoles during 2012, it’s only a matter of time until we see just what games we’ll be playing on them.
