Rock Band vs. Guitar Hero III: Split-screen!
Great minds think alike. We were talking with the guys over at GamesRadar about the fact that both Guitar Hero III and Rock Band share some songs in their playlists -- odd, considering just how much rock music is out there that would work in these games. And naturally, we got to comparing them -- how do two games treat the same material?
GamesRadar wasted no time in creating a split-screen video that shows the common songs side-by-side -- Guitar Hero III is on the left, and Rock Band is on the right. Both games were recorded on the Hard difficulty, but as you'll see, some Hards aren't all that hard, and some Hards are even harder than Hard.
The first video compares "When You Were Young" by the Killers, "Sabotage" by the Beastie Boys, and "Cherub Rock" by Smashing Pumpkins. Only "Sabotage" seems to be on even footing; it's interesting to see how one team interpreted the Killers as single-note riffs while the other doubled them up. And as for Billy Corgan, well, take a look at the difficulty difference -- now he's got a reason to be all whiny.
The second video covers "Reptilia" by the Strokes, "Paranoid" by Black Sabbath, and the Mountain classic "Mississippi Queen." The riff on "Reptilia" shows what we've experienced so far: Guitar Hero III's Hard is equivalent to Rock Band's Expert.
Keep in mind that each developer is making their own artistic and gameplay calls about how to interpret what they hear -- a guitar has 22 frets, a guitar controller has 5 buttons, and something somewhere has to be compromised, right? But as Guitar Hero III players lick their wounds from the game's surprising difficulty, it will be interesting to see how those same gamers react to Rock Band's softer Hard. Will it be a welcome change, or will they crave a greater challenge, having survived Neversoft's boot camp?
Mejor thanks again to GamesRadar for doing all the heavy lifting on the video. Check out their take on this topic here.

I think the OXM guys are completely overblowing GH difficulty out of control, the jump in gh2 between medium and hard was massive, so I don't get where the things about gh3 come about, besides the gh3 songs in medium are much more fun to play than gh2 in medium, and the charts flow better.

No offence but GH3 looks way better than what Rock Band has to show. But the drums look awsome especialy being a drum player. So I hope to see them both in my living room.

lol @ the last paragraph. "Mejor thanks again to GamesRadar for doing all the heavy lifting on the video. Check out their take on this topic here." Mejor is Spanish for "better/best." OXM, I think you must have meant "Major thanks.." Interesting article, kinda sad how different they are, but cool in it's own right.

In my opinion the guitar in GH3 has better software... but the guitar in rock band has a better actual guitar. The drums make a big difference for me though as a former drummer.

Nothing against GH3, but Neversoft is carving out a hardcore following with its note chart arrangements -- something that just isn't appealing to me anymore. Neversoft is arbitrarily making it more difficult for no particular reason than to please the hardcore. One only needs to glance at the Achievements for validation. From the complaints I've read across the interwebs from the hardcore, I'd rather Harmonix stay true to keeping the game accessible, while the hardcore be happy w/what Neversoft is bringing to the table. Rock Band is fine the way it is...

The guitar part looks a little more manageable than GH3 but I played the drums at Best Buy. It was lacking that fun and excitement you get from the guitar. Only time will tell which one is better.
