Rock Band Download Low-Down: Week 36
Each week we’ll run out onto our website stage like roadies and review the latest Rock Band Downloadable Content. Check back every week! (And click here for all of our previous music DLC reviews.)
*NOTE: Each of the songs this week costs 160 Microsoft Points ($2). The NIN Pack 2 is available for 440 Microsoft Points. The Shinedown songs are only available as singles.

Nine Inch Nails Pack 2
WHAT ROCKS: Like the first NIN pack, drums are where it's at here. Your hands will be utterly destroyed by these tunes. Watch out for the bridges and entire last section on "Burn" in pariticular. The whole of "Capital G" isn't too bad -- it's probably the easiest song in the pack -- while you'll need to have your hands and feet in shape for parts of the drumline on "Last," whose drums are the most fun of the three.
WHAT SUCKS: The guitarist and bassist literally get to stand around and do nothing for a disappointing chunk of these songs. And what riffs they do get to play are boring and repetitive.
FINAL VERDICT: We are big Nine Inch Nails fans, but on these three tracks there is almost nothing to do for half of the band. How about "Head Like a Hole" next time?

--
"Devour" by Shinedown
WHAT ROCKS: Catchy vocals, a fun red/green/bass-pedal drum riff, and a guitar part that will keep your hands moving.
WHAT SUCKS: Bass is fast enough to keep you on your toes but not particularly interesting.
FINAL VERDICT: Chord-tastic and not particularly memorable on any part, but we like it!

--
"Junkies for Fame" by Shinedown
WHAT ROCKS: Apparently this song has never been released before, which is a compelling selling point. As a Rock Band tune, it's most fun on drums. Vocals are also rather strong.
WHAT SUCKS: Again, bass is pretty weak.
FINAL VERDICT: More chord-y guitar, catchy-lyric fare. Not that we mind.

I'm a NIN fan, much like the OXM staff, but I'm waiting for an album. Of course, I bought it. I mean 'Last' was pretty damn good for guitar and vocals at the same time. (In case you don't know for people who haven't played me yet, I play both at the same time :-)) Burn is excellent on vocals, for evil songs deserve praise. I don't have drums but they will kick your ass so hard. Capital G should be better on guitar and bass. Sorry for the paragraph, but I needed to spill that out. Also, I need more MSP. I would have given it a 'Not Bad' rating.

Well, if any week was good to send my faltering hard drive in for exchange, I must say better this week than another. These tracks I can definitely wait for. NIN are worthy of album DLCs, Pretty Hate Machine, The Downward Spiral, Broken etc. etc.AND AGAIN I SAY LOUDLY: IF anyone at Harmonix reads this. Please release Megadeth's Countdown to Extinction or Youthanasia. The populace want to ROCK!

I bought the Shinedown songs because I thought Junkies for Fame sounded cool and I called Devour coming to RB over a month ago. I enjoy the vocals, but I'll admit, the guitar is some what of a let down.

*eyes roll* Oh, please pardon Harmonix for not spying on you. I'm pretty confident there will be more NiN packs, I mean, he's got what, 9-10 albums now? I'm waiting patiently for "the Line Begins to Blur." :D

So why it is that Harmonix/MTV has chosen a bunch of NIN songs that I've hardly ever listened to for its first two packs? Is it so hard to chose songs I've actually heard and liked?

I think I would have given the NIN pack a "not bad". I had a lot of fun with Last and Burn.
