What's next, 2008?
trofootball ASKS:
Some people are calling this the golden age of the Xbox 360 with all these triple-A titles like Mass Effect, Call of Duty 4, and Halo 3. But what are the plans for the next holiday season? Are we going to be scraping the barrel of games for a few gems next year, or are there some titles that will lead to another great holiday season for 2008? Don’t get me wrong -- this holiday season was fantastic, but I haven’t really seen anything good lined up except Halo Wars...
OXM SAYS:
We have a lot of the same questions about 2008, and getting answers to them will be the focus of our next couple issues. We think a lot of the mystery of 2008 stems from the fact that Microsoft consciously chose to focus its E3 2007 PR and subsequent PR on 2007 games only, and is only just now willing to start talking to us about 2008. We can kinda understand why -- with such a glorious 2007 on the way, why take gamers' eyes off the ball? But we also worry, like you, that they're also covering up a considerably weaker 2008. Still, there are some obvious great hopes on the horizon: GTA4, Fable 2, Gears of War 2, and Halo Wars are probably the stars, but we're also excited about Codemasters' racing follow-up to Dirt, Condemned 2, Mirror's Edge, and more. Now, before you get too fired up, we can't guarantee that all or even any of those games will come out in 2008, but they are reasons to expect a bright future.

Im really looking forward to Grand Theft Auto IV coming out April 29, 2008. I love GTA games. Back in 2003 I didnt even knew it exists, but my friend had GTA III and I played it, and as you know, I loved it! Then I found out about GTA Vice City so I bought it. I wanted more since I past the 2 of them. Then one day, I was watching TV when i saw The GTA San Ansreas Trailer!! And I got it on day 1 (October 26, 2004). I past it, I past GTA LCS, GTA VCS, and know I wanna beat GTA IV!!!

Golden age for XBOX? I don’t really think so. It seems that things are getting better, but I’m still looking for new things I like. I really like the great story lines of the good RPGs, and these are being developed less often than I like. Some old titles like Final Fantasy 8 had one of the best story lines in recent memory, but do I replay a pre-XBOX PS1 game on my VIZIO 42 inch 1080P screen? No way! I’m looking for a good RPG for the XBOX360, and I don’t want to wait until Christmas of 2008 either. Most of the XBOX games that get big press seem to be first person shooters with minimal storyline, or some dark and gloomy setting semi-RPG. I do like Halo 3--I have it and play it (the cut scenes fill in the story blanks and look great in High Def). Instead of “Golden Age” I would say that since XBOX360, PS3, and Wii came out, the last two years have been the “High-Def Developmental Age” for developers. Now that I am older and have a little more cash, I recently went on a splurge and now own all of the major systems and use the Joytech controller to connect them to my LCD TV (my wife says I’m stupid!). I don’t have any particular loyalty to any one platform, but I do think the XBOX360 is the best one at the moment. The real competition between the platforms really lies with game developers, and with the likes of Bungie in the mix, MicroSoft will continue benefit. Behind the scenes support to developers may result in better High-Def game graphics, but all things being equal, the compelling story line makes the difference for me. Do you XBOX360 game developers hear this? I want more story, and I don’t want to wait an entire year!

2008 is a huge year for me. I can't wait for more info on Alan Wake(I've never felt so hyped for a game i know nothing about) and i cant wait for fable 2 and possibly GoW 2. But what Im extremely excited to hear is what bioware is cooking up with LucasArts. Ive got a feeling that they could be working on..... Knights of the Old Republic 3.
think about it: On the bioware site, the "MMO" game and the Lucasarts project are listed as two different games, which may eliminate the runors of a new star wars MMO. And even though its been over 3 years now, Im not giving up hope. Look at Duke Nukem forever! Nobody thought it would see the light of day again, yet they just released a trailer for it 2 weeks ago! Kotor 1 was not only one of the greatest RPGs of all time, it was one of the greatest Xbox games, and Kotor 2, while it had its fualts, was still awesome in it's own respect, which is why it seems pointless for LucasArts to completely cancel Kotor 3. No, I think its still coming. I dont know when, but we can only hope. I know you guys at OXM are Kotor fans too. What do you think? Am i just a hopefull fanboy? Or do you think i have a point?

I'm not too worried about 2008 (or at least, the Spring/Summer). Here are just a few games I'm looking forward to playing in the next year:
* Battlefield: Bad Company
* Call of Duty 5
* Fracture
* Halo Wars
* Indiana Jones
* Star Wars: The Force Unleashed
* Splinter Cell: Conviction
* Rainbow Six Vegas 2
Other Games of 2008:
* Gears of War 2
* Grand Theft Auto IV
* LEGO Indiana Jones
* Tom Clancy's EndWar (the OXM preview got me interested)
These are all the games I could think of off the top of my head - I'm sure there are more that I will remember later. Plus, you can't forget about the "yearly sequels" like Rock Band 2, Guitar Hero 4.
2008, while maybe not quite as awesome as this year, looks like it's shaping up to be a another good year for gamers.

hi there guys,
you know trofootball, i was thinking the same way as you... i've always been a playstation fan, but i bought my xbox 360 last year because (to put it simple) IT GOT ME!. maybe the guys from OXM are right, microsoft focused this year on their 2007 line up and wanted gamers to know and be sure there were going to be plenty of games this year.
but then i was worried 2008 could lack of games compared to the PS3, but then i realized we are getting plenty of games as well. we are getting good exclusives and good multiplatform games... to mention a few:
EXCLUSIVES:
-ninja gaiden 2,fable 2, alan wake, too human, kingdom under fire, halo wars, infinite undiscovery, etc
MULTIPLATFORM:
-soul calibur 4, street fighter 4, DMC 4, GTA4, Silent hill 5, the last remnant, resident evil 5, etc...
of course im skipping some other big names, but please relax a little, cuz there are plenty of games for the next year =)

The 360 is only in year two of its existence and just look at all these good games that came out. 2008 should prove to be a just as good of a year with games such as GTA4, DMC4, Street Fighter 4, Fable 2, Too Human, Fallout 3, Halo Wars, Rainbow Six Vegas 2, Splinter Cell Conviction, maybe another Call of Duty, possibily Gears of War 2 and who knows maybe a certain Snake will slither his way over to 360 before 08 is done. As great as 2007 was for games and how great the games actually were, I am really excited for the years to come.

It just seems to me that every year gets better so I don't think you have anything to worry. I'm also looking forward to Halo Wars but Starcraft II might take my interest.
