USB Flash Drive as Memory Unit?

Spartan 117 ASKS:

Can you use USB drives and alternate hard drives as memory units? The Xbox ones are pricey...

OXM SAYS:

An Xbox 360 won't recognize a USB flash drive or another external hard drive as a memory unit, so you can't save games on them. Your only options for saving games is a Xbox 360-specific memory card or hard drive. You can, however, transfer save files, video, pictures, and music using alternate methods.

COMMENTS:

I have flashed a 250Gb Scorpio blue HDD with official Xbox firmware. I then placed it in my 20Gb case. Total cost 50$ and one evening of internet research. No XBL Banning, (Microsoft told me so) no over priced proprietary hardware!
Also available on ebay for those un-tech savvy ppl.

"I don't dial 911... I buy bullets."

that will help me out some thanx oxm!!!

You actually CAN use other means of storage outside of the realm of official xbox hardware. And you can do it without breaking any laws or voiding your warranty.

You simply need to take any hard drive, or flash storage devise, and change its compatibility to NTSC format using a computer.

With that done, the Xbox 360 will recognize it as a memory card or alternative memory device.

What is the phone number to call to get the cable ? I am in Canada, and none of the phone numbers I can find on the net work from up here. Remember, phones are rather new to us up here is the great white north.

There is a Microsoft made cable just for this, called a Transfer Cable. If you don't have one, call up MS, and ask them for one, they will give you one for free if you provide the serial numbers on both HDDs.
Then, just do the transfer!
May take a few minutes, though.

Hope this Helps!

I just bought a used Xbox 360 Elite and wanted to transfer some of my DLC game add-ons. The original owner has already done a drive transfer from when he upgraded. How can I transfer some of the larger sized files (700 MB range)? The Xbox 360 memory unit is only 512MB. You suggested alternate methods above, could you explain?
