Save a game!
Savage13 ASKS:
I’m considering purchasing a SanDisk Cruzer Crossfire USB flash drive for use with my Xbox 360 and PC. From the SanDisk web page, it is clear that you can transport MP3s and photos back and forth, but it is a little confusing as to whether you can save game files to the flash drive and use it like a memory card. “Use it with your latest Xbox 360 console for photo viewing, music listening, play .wmv videos and configuring your wireless settings. With SanDisk, you will be able to take your game data, music, video, and photos where ever you go – and share your music and photos from your PC to Xbox 360.” Do they mean PC game data only, or Xbox 360 game saves, too?
OXM SAYS:
Yeah, that's a pretty deceptive description. To be clear, you cannot use any USB flash drive as a memory card for your Xbox 360, so SanDisk [cough] MUST'VE [cough] meant PC save games only. You can plug a USB stick into your 360 to transfer music and photos around, but that device will have no access to any save games or profiles -- you can only use a memory unit for that.

For those asking about using external HDDs for music, movies and photos, yes, it can work. I've got a Maxtor OneTouch 250GB USB external HDD that I can use to listen to MP3s, watch movies, etc. through the media blade.
Here's the catch. To use an external HDD, you need to format the drive so that it is using a FAT32 file system, and not the more standard (nowadays at least) NTFS file system.
Like everyone else has been saying, no you cannot move anything from the 360 to the HDD or vice-versa. You can't save to the HDD, or anything like that.
As far as movies go, I've been able to play .WMVs and .AVIs with no problem at all. MP3s, of course, are the same as plugging in an iPod, or a Zune.
Hope this helps!

I bought a 250Gig external USB HDD when I was doing video editing back in school and I use that now with the videos and mp3s playing on the Xbox 360. Can't use it to save games on it though but I have the HDD for the 360 so that's not a problem for me. I love the ambiguity of their description though. Gotta read the fine print.

Does this also hold true if I hooked up a 500GB external hard drive to my 360 via USB? My nephew tried to do that to no avail, and while I typically play my music off my iPod or jump drive, he just lost his Zune and tried to play his music from the hard drive...is it a firmware/software thing?

And you can't transfer anything. You can put stuff on the drive to play on your 360, but you can't copy or move anything from your PC to your 360, or vice versa.
