How do I update?

Jake007 ASKS:

I used to be able to update my 360 just by pushing A on your demo discs to update monthly. I have nearly 20 original Xbox games that I still can't play, but most of them are listed on Xbox.com as compatible. So what's the deal? I noticed that now when I ask the update to continue it checks my online account, but I don't have Live. Do I need Xbox Live just to play my old games?

OXM SAYS:

There are two ways to get the update without having Live. First, you can grab the update from Xbox.com and write the file to a blank DVD or CD as described here. If you don't have a burner, you can simply order the games support CD for free, however you will have to pay shipping costs. This way only works if you live in the United States or Canada.

COMMENTS:

I think that the update is there for the people who have just started using the magazine, but never updated their console to support Original Xbox games. So, it's always there if you need it, but if you don't, just don't look at it.

Either way it goes, according to the XBox site, there has not been an update since Novemeber of 2007. So then what are we updating when we put in the monthly demo discs? Just curious.

hmm... really? worked for me back when I didn't have Xbox Live. =)

Those instructions for updating via a CD are wrong. I'm on dial-up, so I had to do this too, so I wrote a tutorial on how to do it a while ago.
