OXM Roundtable: GTA V logo speculation
It's been half a day since the world first laid eyes on the 'V' in Grand Theft Auto V's logo (shown below), and folks are already speculating about the image in a major way. Some think the game will be set in LA (like Kotaku), while others (like GamePro) think the logo's resemblance to old currency could set the game further in the past than any GTA before.
The GTA-experienced OXM staff each have their own thoughts on the matter, and their thoughts are below the large logo

RYAN MCCAFFREY, SENIOR EDITOR: You know I’m hyped for a new GTA when even the logo is fascinating to me. That being said, we can infer a few things from the dollar-bill “V.” First, it’s almost certainly going to be set in America, given that the “V”’s U.S. dollar font. Next, I’d have to imagine that, per recent GTA tradition, it’s going to poke its sharp satirical stick in the direction of Wall Street and the global economic woes and the politics of both parties. That would place it in 2011/2012. However, while we may see some sort of “Occupy Wall Street” type of mission, I suspect the game won’t be set in Liberty City – i.e. New York – because there’s no chance in hell Rockstar North would use the same city twice in a row and four times overall (GTA III, GTA: Liberty City Stories, GTA IV). Hmm, maybe we’ll be going to the GTA equivalent of Washington, D.C... and might we see the return of GTA III’s billionaire mogul Donald Love as a Bernie Madoff-esque figure?
KEVIN SMITH, FEATURES EDITOR: First thing I thought of— and what seems to be an increasingly popular sentiment— is that the green, currency-themed “V” could represent the financial issues happening in this country right now: the banks getting bailed out while the rest of us battle a credit and mortgage crisis, a stumbling economy, and a meager jobs market. And if this GTA were to deal with some of that somehow, like, say, the protagonist exacting street justice against a Bernie Madoff-type villain or acting on behalf of some sort of activist group, GTA would have a real opportunity to be a catalyst in unleashing some pixelated catharsis. Plus, the premise would be a much more interesting approach then just the generic “get money & rise to power” angle. Whether or not Rockstar’s even thinking along those lines remains to be seen though. If not though, it's going to be a major missed opportunity.
DAVE RUDDEN, WEB EDITOR: Given the history of the series thus far, I'm going to take the easy route and predict a return to Vice City. More than any other Grand Theft Auto game, Vice City was all about earning bucket-loads of money in Rockstar's Miami-esque locale. The 80s were all about economic excess, and setting this game around 1985 (five!) puts it smack-dab between Vice City Stories and Vice City proper, which is a nice setting for more 80's-fueled goodness. For many folks -- myself included -- Vice City was the zenith of the franchise, and a return would definitely be welcomed.
DAVE CORDON, ART DIRECTOR: I believe it'll be all about counterfeiting and money laundering. In a surprise move, it will be again set in Liberty City, but they will add a fifth borough, Quinn, to the existing four (hence the emphasis of five). It will follow the story of a young forger who starts his career making fake IDs, growing into the kingpin of a counterfeit moneymaking ring.

I agree with Ryan's second point that it may end up being at our capital. That's an underutilized storyline, corruption in American politics. Plus, it may open opportunities for antics across the country (Road to Nowhere in Alaska, 3 mile Island, whatever).Yet, I feel that Las Venturas may be the best answer (V = Vegas/Venturas according to gamesradar). I would love to take another turn in Sin City, but it seems too small for a GTA game (at least as it was in San Andreas).

I think it would be cool to be back in San Andreas. With that big of an environment think of all the possibilities. Ponder on it.

I like Ryan and Kevin's idea. Not only would it be a fresh take on the usual stories but it would resound with lots of people who are sick with the direction this country is headed into. Collectors edition please
