Next Xbox report: Blu-ray format, upgraded Kinect, & used game deterrent
Next Xbox concept art created by Martin Abel
Another major gaming outlet has stepped forward with information on the next Xbox. Kotaku has divulged a list of features for the Xbox 360's successor, including Blu-ray as the system's game format, an upgraded version of Kinect, a smaller controller, and a method of copy-protection that would lock out the use of pre-owned games.
Kotaku did not have any additional information on how the Xbox 360's successor would deter used game playback or the controller, but did offer addition details on the Kinect's evolution, noting that the next Kinect would include a processor to increase the device's ability to detect motion. Kotaku also corroborated yesterday's report of the next Xbox's power, noting it could possibly be eight times as powerful as the Xbox 360.
What do you think of the latest hypothetical feature list for the next Xbox? Would you buy it if it had these features?

The new/used thing is not a HUGE deal for me personally. I don't sell my games when I'm done with them. The exception being if I happen to have more than one copy of one of them, and my wife no longer really wants to play it. If that happens, we'll get rid of one copy. What we usually do with old sports games though, is donate them to the local thrift store, so other people can get some use out of them for cheap. I do occasionally buy a used game or two here and there though, so I agree that shutting down the used game market is stupid from a business standpoint. There are a lot of people out there that don't have very fluid incomes, and when they or their children want a game, it makes more sense to look for a used copy that costs 35-40 dollars, instead of a new one for 50-60 dollars. Other than that, Blu-ray seems like a sensible inevitability, regardless of the cost up-front or the egg on the faces to MS. As for the new Kinect, I agree that it should really be a built in part of the new system, rather than a peripheral. If they want it to be one of the primary focus points for gaming going forward, then integrate it. If everyone has it, they will at the very least, try it out at some point in time. As for the controller... Why? Why mess with one of the most perfectly executed items in gaming today? If they are going to add some functionality to it, that's one thing. But making it smaller? NOOOOOOOOOOO. Please. It's perfectly sized right now. Not to big, not to small, perfect heft to it. It will be exciting to see what they do with the NextBox... Let's hope that they get it right for the gamers though!

Wow it sounds like they really want to control and limit
what we do as consumers. I like to rent
games before I buy and to limit used games would also limit the rental business
as well as used game sales. I would think both disc would be looked at the same
because you’re not the first to play it. Comments?<?xml:namespace prefix = o ns = "urn:schemas-microsoft-com:office:office" />

What scares me the most is this trend in all digital purchases in that you buy it but do you really own it. It's really like an expansion of renting concept. Any content from the marketplace is this way along with the behemouth itunes. If I'm to pay $60 for a game I want the disk, the license to own it and do with it as I please (including resale) as long as I'm not trying to reverse engineer it. I rarely buy anything off the xbox marketplace because I have the content but do not have the ability or rights for resale. AND, don't try and say that if I bought marketplace stuff from a brick & mortar that it would be more expensive. Look at old games that are on the marketplace. You can get the same thing at walmart in the reduced area for the same price. Call me old fashioned but if I buy something, I like to have that tangible thing sitting right in my hand where I can touch, it feel it and do with what I want. Take another trend, "The Cloud". Everyone has one and wants to keep your data there but as far as I'm concerned the jury is still out on the cloud and I won't be using any of them. It's just another way to take control of the data that you purchased with your hard earned $$$.

What in the hell is Microsoft thinking? I understand that they get no money for a used game but used games drive most video game retailers out there; they're the sole reason we have so many stores advertising the products Microsoft sells, and they provide a way for people with a bunch of old games to get money to buy new ones. Let's be honest; the vast majority of people who trade in their games do so to buy a new one. If Microsoft goes through with it and other sytems follow suit, it could severely impact the game industry in a negative way. It will greatly hurt Microsoft's public image, and give other systems either an advantage over them or an excuse to run the majority of game distributors into the ground.

Yeah...if Microsoft was to pull a complete Sony and absolutely throw any their market share and momentum into the next generation, let them actually look to implement something like this. What about game rentals. Being greedy is a good way to get nothing, as I can assure you, I will NOT be buying the next console, if a feature like this is implemented, in any way, shape, or form. I can deal with anti-piracy measures, but forcing me to buy new games is a kiss of death for hte new console. Also, what about people with multiple system/users? I have 3 xbox consoles in my household and 5 different users...how stupid is it to even discuss DRM to prevent used games. I think this is a major issue, if anybody at Microsoft is even contemplating how it could be done...

I can guaranty with absolute certainty that I will not be buying the Next box if a system like that is implemented.

Yeah, I'm with Stealth. If I beat everything in a single player RPG and have 100% achievments, I should be able to give to someone who would have no exposure to the game otherwise. Only the best of the best games are available new within 2 years after it's released. If used games are unavailable, then we'll have a very short window of opportunity to pick up a game before it gets discounted and then sent to production oblivion. Also, it should be noted that I borrowed a friends Mass Effect, and it prompted me to buy Mass Effect 2 new and a crap load of DLC. I also borrowed Rock Band, and I went out to buy Rock Band 2 with two guitars, drums and microphone, not to mention DLC. I wouldnt have pulled the trigger on either of those two purchass without trying first. Developers have a right to make money from their products, but find another way to encourage people to buy new. If you take away resell, then drop prices to $30, or less. No one complains about one owner usage of $10 XBLA games!

Please don't mess up the controller design. I think it's perfect as is. Also, let's hope the used game thing is NOT true. Just give us more incentive to buy the digital form day 1 for major releases. That will solve the used game problem without inconveniencing users.

I agree with ptc. The 360 gamepad is basically PERFECT. The D-pad could be better, but that's a very minor, minor complaint from me. Don't mess with it, MS!

How and why would they disable the playability of used games?? Wouldn't this kill off gamestop? Furthermore wouldn't this really hurt gamers who don't have money to throw around? I usually can only afford to purchase a new game because I sell a couple used games. This would ruin gaming for many people.

This may be a bit strange, but I wonder if they have considered integrating Kinect into the Xbox itself instead of making it a peripheral? It would just be a few sensors built into the front of the xbox. I'm glad we're finally getting Blu-Ray though. Battlefield 3 was kind of a wake-up call.

You want exclusives? Make a system that literally can not play used games and most studios and production companies will love the Xbox. I don't have a clue how they could possibly pull that off, but it seems like a logical step.
Blu-Ray also seems logical because it can hold more data and games are getting big. We still seem a long way from download/stream only and it would probably be too expensive to develop a proprietary format.

Yes, I would be interested as long as Blu-Ray is optional. If I could download my games, that would be a first-day buy. I never got the Red Ring of Death but did have to replace my Xbox 4 times because the drive would either stop reading discs, not open the tray at all, or would spin excessively loud!

Why would you want Blu-Ray to be optional? It is compatible with DVD. They do replace the disc drive, without having to replace the xbox itself. As for the disc loudness, that's what the install game to HDD was for.

By optional, I mean having the choice of either buying the game on disc or just download it right there on launch day. Certain games I know I would like to keep forever but some I would be okay with just playing it once and then have the choice of selling it - which is what this suggested plan seems to be trying to prevent! -_-
