Minecraft Xbox 360 outsold the PC version in 2012

The success of Minecraft: Xbox 360 Edition has been well documented. A certified hit and consistent seller, Minecraft managed to perform incredibly well for Mojang and 4J Studios in 2012. Now Mojang has revealed the final sales statistics for the entire year, and you may be surprised to find out the 360 version actually outperformed the PC edition.
Showcasing the Christmas day sales numbers, Mojang divulged some 100,416 copies of the game were sold on XBLA. Comparatively, 70,808 copies were sold on the PC. For the year, we already knew the 360 version sold over 5 million copies, but now thanks to Mojang, we have a more exact tally. To be precise, 5,002,370 copies were purchased by Xbox 360 owners since the game's release in May of 2012. PC owners were no slouches either though, downloading 4,177,843 copies of the game during (roughly) the same timeframe, though it should be noted that many PC owners purchased the gane before 2012, as that version has topped 8 million in lifetime sales.
Of course, the biggest shock of all is that both versions were outpaced by the portable version. Minecraft: Pocket Edition (which releaseed in 2011) sold 5,899,727 (283,939 which came on Dec. 25) in 2012, making that the actual best-selling version of the game. No matter what way you look at it, Minecraft has penetrated the gaming public in ways even Mojang couldn't have imagined. That's a good thing. Hopefully more surprise hits like this will continue to succeed on a variety of platforms.
