Lego Star Wars III

Yep, that’s right. Starting at the end of Attack of the Clones and extending through Season 2 of TV’s Clone Wars cartoon, Lego Star Wars III: The Clone Wars has new source material, gorgeous graphics…and is still so gosh-darn adorable.
In a recent demo, we got some hands-on time with three areas, starting with a ground battle on a coral planet. As Yoda, we sampled new abilities such as saber-throwing and Force Lift, which we used to levitate a Super Battle Droid, making him into a portable turret. After turning his blaster fire on his evil allies, we used it to demolish Golden Lego, one of a few new Lego types with specific weaknesses.
“Shadow of the Malevolence,” our second mission, was a space battle akin to those in previous Lego games, but with some compelling twists — mainly, you can actually land on the hull of General Grievous’ massive warship, hop out, and hack through Separatist troops and nab collectibles as brave Jedi Plo Koon. Eventually, you get back in your craft and fling familiar pink explosives at the Malevolence’s weak points…BOOM!

Most interesting was the “Duel of the Droids” mission, where we saw an example of the game’s dual storytelling. In such scenarios, you’ll play as one character (here, Ahsoka battling Grievous), with a second, nearby character (in this case, Anakin) shown in picture-in-picture view. Holding down Y let us leap into Anakin’s body, at which point Ahsoka was in the picture-in-picture bubble; as Anakin, we battled droid hordes and reached Ahsoka in time to gang up on poor Grievous. His fall, our fun!
