Battle Fantasia

WORDS BY: Dan Amrich

Once upon a time, there was a brash young hero, a grizzled gunfighter, a catgirl waitress, a magical bunny rabbit, and a pretty, pretty princess — and together, they beat the snot out of each other (still with us?). That’s Battle Fantasia, a storybook-themed fighter from the crew that made the equally weird-to-American-eyes Guilty Gear series.

The fast, masher-friendly gameplay works as good as it looks; having gorgeously animated 3D characters in a 2D plane gives the game a modern sheen with familiar mechanics. Color-coding the damage blasts would have certainly been nice, but the special attacks look stellar, and the Japanese voice-overs help the game retain its authenticity. Battle Fantasia may be a niche game for a specific audience, but otaku will live happily ever after.

On Xbox 360
6.5
  • Masher-friendly gameplay
  • Beautiful art design
  • Not localized enough to appeal beyond otaku
COMMENTS:

If you read OXM's review scale (explicitly emblazoned at the front of the reviews section in each issue) the 6-6.5 range specifically states "Otaku won't mind much, but the rest of the world will."

Obviously, Dan is a mega Japanese fighting nerd (he's notorious for being the arcade guy, after all) but is able to step outside himself and realize that this isn't for anyone but his people.

Who are also my people. Really want to play this one.

How is this game a 6.5? Your review practically gushed about how good it was, and the only bad thing was that it has niche appeal... and that warrants a 6.5?
Tommy, can you hear me?!

So games should be reviewed based upon their value to the core market? I guess casual games should all get 10's then.
