No Doubt Track Pack
WHAT ROCKS: All three of these tracks should be instantly recognizable and hummable because they got oodles of radio airplay in the late '90s — plus they're very melodic. That's the strength of this pack: it's not crushingly hard even at the higher tracks because the song structures themselves. "Sunday Morning" fuses straight-ahead 4/4 rock with upstrumming ska breaks that keep the guitar parts interesting but not overwhelming. "Excuse Me Mr." is the trickiest guitar track of the pack, with fast single-note strums that burst into power chords. And while we remembered "Don't Speak" — the band's biggest hit to date — as a bit of a ballad, playing it in the game quickly reminded us that while the beat is mid-tempo, the actual instrumentation moves around quite a bit. The fingerpicked main riff has been skillfully translated here. Also, all three tracks are bass powerhouses, ample evidence that Tony Kanal is a seriously underrated bassist — his parts translate here as nothing more than tasty, melodic Guitar Hero candy. If you're a GH bassist, you'll absolutely want this pack.
WHAT SUCKS: Only No Doubt's overexposure could cause you to cringe at this collection. If you simply despise the band, as usual, you won't enjoy playing their songs in Guitar Hero III...
FINAL VERDICT: ...but even if you still like them, you know, a little, this one's worth picking up. After all, it's been ten years since these songs were overplayed on alt-rock radio. You might be surprised how fresh these pre-emo anthems feel today in the post-pop-punk age of Coheed and Cambria.

You know, everyone has his or her favorite games, just like favorite colors. Not everyone will agree on the same, but that doesn’t make one better than the other except to the individual. Guitar Hero is no more “sooo six months ago†than Rock Band. GH is a great game and by comparison, in some cases more challenging than RB. Someday I might buy RB (for variety)…but I’m in no hurry. However, what I’d like to see are more song releases for GH (only 24 GH2 songs & 27 GH3 songs to date), at least on par with releases made for RB (77 songs to date), and heavy on the Southern Rock genre, please! So, that’s my GH/RB opinion, and it’s right for me…maybe not for you, but that’s ok. Rock on gamers!

And the sad thing is... I know my GHIII disc is collecting dust and scratches where I left it: under my Rock band box.
