Golden Axe: Beast Rider

We expect a few things from a modern arcade-style brawler: reasonably placed checkpoints, more than one playable character, varied enemies, and multiplayer. Golden Axe: Beast Rider, Sega’s reinvention of the arcade classic, delivers none of them. Perhaps the worst oversight of the bunch is the lack of multiplayer options — the game may have been more fun if both you and a buddy could trudge through the piles of enemies. But factor in the horrifyingly bad voiceovers, ultra-repetitive boss fights, and a counterattack system that’s too precise to use properly, and there’s just no hope or redemption. It all adds up to a game that tries to walk the line between difficult and frustrating, but receives a nice big shove into the realm of controller-throwing mediocrity.
On Xbox 360
+ Hearkens back to the arcade-y days of yore...
- ...but lacks the multiplayer joy.
- The counterattack system takes practically the whole game to get used to.
? Why do we only get to ride the huge T-Rex style Megabrax for one level?

Game was okay. I would have given it a 7. It does have action, a storyline, dialogue, cut scenes, and challenge. It lacks co-op and is extremely repetitive.![]()

This was a game I followed for months. I expected the lack of co-op and was willing to accept that because DLC could change that. It just wasn't what it could have been. This loaf needed more time in the oven. I felt like I was playing a demo, Waiting for that OH WOW moment. I am going to stop praying for that Altered Beast game now. I want to remember the good old days. SEGA you broke my heart again.

I was hoping it was as average as Conan. Seriously, the only shock is that this game is a 4 instead of a 5 or 6.

Damn. I had high hopes for this game. Loved the original arcade and genesis versions. Oh well, we still have those........

Oh, and gamesoxm? When the original series makes such big waves BECAUSE of its co-op, you kinda have to consider that when you're scoring its sequel/revamp. And judging from OXM reviews of yore, I'm pretty sure the lack of multi-player only accounted for one point - and a 5.0 STILL doesn't make it onto my "must buy" list... gt: cart00nstrip

Can't say this was TOO far up on my get list, but now it may not even get onto my Goozex list! Wow, way to waste a great chance to revive an old franchise, Sega... gt: cart00nstrip

Because this game did not have co-op does not make it a bad game. This review, does in no way provide an actual impression of the game, but rather a rant on how the reviewer did not like the lack of co-op. I highly doubt Taylor actually played the game.
