Surprising nearly everyone in attendance and watching at home, FromSoftware and Namco Bandai announced Dark Souls II during the VGAs on Friday. The sequel to 2011's Dark Souls, this new entry in the Souls series promises to be just as cripplingly challenging, with more of the unrelenting punishment the franchise's fans have come to love.
Dark Souls II will feature a new story and hero, as well as a completely new world to explore. There will also be revamped server-based multiplayer, which FromSoftware says will "put a distinct Dark Souls II twist on the concept of playing and sharing with others." The sequel will be directed by Tomohiro Shibuya, but Souls series cretaor Hidetaka Miyazaki will remain on as supervisor.
"This new chapter in the Dark Souls saga presents opportunities for us to drive innovation in gameplay design, develop an entirely new story, and expand the scope of the world in which the player interacts with the game. We have taken these necessary steps with Dark Souls II in order to evolve the overall experience of the Dark Souls series,” said Shibuya.
There's no release date mentioned just yet, but we just traveled to Tokyo to get the first details on Dark Souls II. You can read all about the epic battles and brutal bosses that await when our next issue hits shelves on 12/29.
