Felicia Day's Dragon Age II DLC preview
It seemed to make a lot of sense when we heard back in February that actress Felicia Day was making a web series, Dragon Age: Redemption, based on BioWare’s ongoing RPG series.
Day had already created one of the most successful gaming-focused web series of all time with The Guild, so exploring the fantasy-rich universe of the Dragon Age series seemed like fertile ground. Soon there was word Redemption was delayed, only to resurface recently with an announcement that Day — or at least an elfin representation voiced by her — would also be starring in new Dragon Age II DLC, titled Mark of the Assassin.
Day recently stopped by to give us a look at the first 20-minutes or so of Mark of the Assassin — which will cost $10 (800 Microsoft Points) and goes on sale Oct. 11 — the same day as the first episode of Redemption debuts.
Assassin’s main story opens with Dragon Age II’s ponytailed dwarf, Varric, telling the tale of Day’s character, Tallis, to a Seeker. As Varric explains, at some point, he and Hawke were ambushed in Kirkwall, only to get some timely intervention from Tallis — a red-headed-rogue with ranged and melee attacks, whose skill tree is based off her abilities in Redemption. After the ambush is thwarted, Tallis convinces Hawke to help her rob a rich guy by the name of Duke Prosper, who is in possession of a jewel called the Heart of Many.
To kick things off, Tallis’ plan is to crash a banquet Prosper is holding at the Chateau Haine, for which Hawke has an invitation. First, though, they decide to go on a hunt to kill a Wyvern. The winner of the hunt will be the guest of honor at the Duke’s shindig, which will help them slip inside his palace to root out the jewel. In our demo, as Day briefly went hands-on playing as Tallis, she gave Hawke some other good reasons to follow her.
“If nothing else, you get fine wine and fancy company,” Tallis says to Hawke. “But, I hope you want more than that.”
“Hellllooo flirty,” Day responded.
The gang eventually finds itself in a tree-lined forest fighting a cluster of dragons and new strange troll-like enemies called Ghastlings. Around this time, Tallis has to do a “nug call” to lure a large Wyvern dragon out of hiding. Day defended her Wyvern-calling noise recorded for the game, which kind of sounded like a chipmunk spiraling into insanity. “Was that…good?,” Hawke quips after one demonstration. Soon the Wyvern emerges, and if you’re successful (which our demo dude was not), you slay and celebrate.
EA & BioWare reps pointed out that the Assassin DLC features all new environments and is pretty non-linear, leaving lots of new terrain and side quests to explore. You won’t be able to keep Tallis in your party past the DLC and no one was saying how long Mark of the Assassin takes to play through, but they did say it’s similar in length to previous Dragon Age II DLC Legacy.
Day says she recorded 12 hours of voice dialogue for the game, and so how your character of Hawke interacts with Tallis leads to various story twists and endings. Will your Hawke be able to hook up with an elfin Felicia Day? Wait a couple weeks to find out. Mark of the Assassin will be available for download on October 11.
