Epic says new Unreal Engine needs 10x the 360's power
Epic’s ever-evolving Unreal Engine saw another upgrade at this year’s DICE conference. The company showed off the latest demo, dubbed “Samaritan,” and CEO Tim Sweeney told the crowd it required 2.5 terraFLOPs to run. For those keeping track at home, the Xbox 360 is currently capable of .25 terraFLOPs. Classified as one trillion floating point operations per second, you can understand just how big a jump it is when Epic says the machine required to run Unreal Engine 4 would have to be 10x more powerful than the 360.
Though nobody knows just what kind of processing power the next generation of Xbox will actually have, it’s not entirely out of the question to think that it will be capable of running the Unreal Engine 4. Epic has said the engine is slated to be released at some point in 2014, Vice President Mark Rein believes the engine might be ready for a reveal later this year. Could it be timed to coincide with the reveal of the next Xbox? Only Microsoft and Epic know. We’ll definitely be keeping a close watch on any further developments though.

the PS3 performed at 2.1 teraflops. Wonder if it will be capable. Had no idea my XBox only ran .25 teraflops.
