Dungeon Fighter Live: Fall of Hendon Myre review

A mysterious illness plagues the realm, spread by the likes of goblins, minotaurs, and the restless undead. As a brawling Fighter, a sword-swinging Slayer, or a pistol-twirling Gunner, your job is to sally forth into this side-scrolling beat-'em-up adventure and end the blight.
Dungeon Fighter Live's vivid assortment of seemingly hand-drawn environments pop off the screen, and each is stuffed with colorful critters. As you brutalize crowds with up to three friends, you'll earn skill points to spend on inventive special attacks. You can summon a whirling blade to windmill through a throng, launch goons into the air for a little melee juggling, or just keep crowds at bay with powerful kicks. Meanwhile, damn near every foe seems to drop something, whether it's a pile of gold or new gear.
Grinning minotaurs look fierce, but they're actually complete pushovers.
Unfortunately, flashy moves and shiny loot aren't so exciting when most monsters drift lazily about like they've got something else on their minds. Heck, against a full squad of four heroes, most enemies barely have a chance to make an entrance, much less attack. The chaotic comic-book visuals are entertaining to watch for a while, but only once you're midway through the campaign will you face any kind of challenge. All the while, unimaginative fetch quests make you scour the same areas repeatedly until you're sick of them.
Some folks might've relished lining up creeps for extended combo attacks, if such efforts weren't constantly interrupted because the attack button also retrieves items from the ground. Even at the best of times, nabbing goodies is a poor substitute for engaging action.
Hit the shops to sell the piles of unwanted junk you'll gather from each battlefield.

+ Pretty characters, monsters, and environments; lots of skills to learn and equipment to find; frenzied co-op.
– Dopey monsters give you little reason to call upon your arsenal of attacks.
– You’ll hate breaking combos and taking damage because the attack button also grabs loot.
? Why can't we name our characters?
