Doom II
If Wolfenstein 3D is the granddaddy of first-person shooters, then Doom is the father. And, as the old saying goes, father knows best. While Wolf 3D didn’t hold up to modern standards, we’ve been clamoring for an XBLA appearance from 1994’s Doom II since the original stormed the service two years ago, and the wait appears to be worth it.

In addition to the classic 32-level campaign, plus the expected online DeathMatch and co-op, this re-issue is packing four-player split-screen and an entirely new nine-level expansion set, designed in 2009 by Nerve Software under the direction of id. Dubbed “No Rest for the Living,” it continues on Earth after Hell’s forces have (seemingly) been vanquished. Nerve boss Brandon James tells us that the new content is designed to be played in four-player co-op on Ultra Violence difficulty, contains “a plethora of secrets to find,” and “is geared toward a more hardcore experience.” He’s not lying — the first level alone of the new episode threw Revenants, Hell Knights, Pain Elementals, an Arachnotron, and multiple Mancubuses at us. Whew! Better still is the unbelievably warm, fuzzy feeling you get when you realize that you’re playing brand-new, id-authorized Doom II content in 2009. Yes!
