"Black Box" revives Modern Warfare 2's snowmobile action with a co-op partner in tow.

Sidestepping the typical map-pack formula, Modern Warfare 3’s Content Collection #1 — which compiles the first six premium Elite DLC additions for non-subscribers — delivers not only fresh multiplayer locations, but also a dazzling pair of new Spec Ops missions.

“Black Ice” borrows the snowmobiles from Modern Warfare 2 for a hectic chase in which one player drives while the other dual-wields assault rifles from the back seat, culminating in your infiltrating and blowing up a base on-foot. Meanwhile, “Negotiator” is even more intense, thanks to an intro where one player’s on his knees, about to be executed, while the other escapes capture and tries to breach the door in time.

Save every last hostage in "Negotiator" to earn a tough Achievement.

The Spec Ops missions are short but super-impressive, while the four maps offer robust and distinct new settings for both Modern Warfare 3’s competitive multiplayer modes and Survival mode. “Black Box” is a standout — the map depicts the wreckage of Air Force One spread out across a gated Southern California community — though the Central Park–esque “Liberation” and winding European streets of “Piazza” are great new locales. Rooftop romp “Overwatch,” on the other hand, doesn’t make as strong an impression.

Collectively, though, it’s a fine set of fresh experiences for Modern Warfare 3. If the rest of the year’s DLC is this strong, consider that Elite subscription well worth the investment.
