Atlus publishing Game of Thrones on Xbox 360

George RR Martin’s A Song of Ice and Fire series was pretty popular amongst the fantasy crowd, but the HBO television adaptation has skyrocketed books like A Game of Thrones and A Clash of Kings into the popularity stratosphere. Of course, in this day and age, it’s all about the crossmedia tie-ins. There have been tabletop and collectible card game adaptations of Martin’s works available for a while, but only recently has there been any movement on video game versions. USA Today put together a nice list of upcoming video game projects bearing the Game of Thrones name, but one stood out above all the rest. Siliconera pointed out that Atlus would be helping Cyanide Studios bring their officially licensed RPG to the 360 (and other consoles) in the US.
Cyanide’s version of the game is actually based on the HBO television show, and will feature clips from the series to help tell the story. Just how much of the story Cyanide’s game will tell is unknown at the moment, but if they’re banking on using real footage, even optimistically, the game can only feature content from the first two books/seasons. A Song of Ice and Fire is perfectly suited for the RPG genre, and it’ll be interesting to see which characters and storylines we get to play as. The sprawling multiple narratives of the books no doubt presents an interesting challenge for Cyanide. We’ll be crossing our fingers for the chance to slap Joffrey Baratheon repeatedly, and for the chance to kick some butt as the Dothraki.
