Assassin’s Creed III to take place during American Revolution

It appears that Ubisoft will indeed be announcing Assassin’s Creed III relatively soon. The company has hyped a major announcement to come early next week, but the thunder may have been stolen from the developer by a series of leaks. First, Kotaku received new artwork from a tipster at Best Buy (shown below). The image features a protagonist decked out in a combination of Revolutionary War garb and some traditional Native American accessories. Most importantly, the unnamed figure is dual-wielding a tomahawk (forged in the Assassin’s Creed “A”) and a small pistol.
While this image alone may have been enough to spoil the big surprise, GameInformer inadvertently confirmed the news by revealing their big new cover story a bit too early. Toastervision has a screengrab of the website prior to the new Assassin’s Creed III banner being taken down (a portion of which is shown above), and in it, our mysterious protagonist can be seen riding with George Washington across the Delaware in the famous painting by Emanuel Gottlieb Leutze. This image all but confirms the setting and time period of the game, though it’s unclear if Assassin’s Creed III will actually happen during the American Revolution or slightly after the fact. Game Informer has since confirmed that Assassin's Creed III will be their April issue cover story, noting that the game will feature an all-new protagonist.
Additionally, Ubisoft has released the game's official box art, shown below Kotaku's image. While the publisher hasn't put forth any details, the art lends even more fuel to the American Revolution fire.
