Assassin’s Creed film closer to becoming reality

Variety is reporting that Sony Pictures and Ubisoft are close to a deal that would put the development of the Assassin’s Creed movie in the hands of the company that brought us the Ghostbusters, Karate Kid, and Spider-Man movie franchises. With plans already in place to develop films based on existing Sony properties Uncharted: Drake’s Fortune and inFamous, the deal could potentially give Sony Pictures a third AAA gaming franchise to develop into films.
According to the story, the deal was possible because Sony is willing to give Ubi the creative input they desire. Both companies see the potential Assassin’s Creed films as "a major tentpole" franchise, meaning we could be seeing just as many Ezio-centric movies as we’ve seen games. With the fourth game due out later this year, there’s no doubting the popularity of the series. Assassin’s Creed is just one of the many gaming properties Ubi hopes to broker into film deals, as the publisher is also looking into plans to develop Tom Clancy’s Ghost Recon and Splinter Cell. Ubisoft has already had one of its games turned into a movie adaptation, working with Disney to produce a Prince of Persia movie that had a modest reception amongst audiences and a poor one amongst critics.
We’re excited by the prospects a potential Assassin’s Creed movie presents. Mostly because the game would translate perfectly to film, and not at all because it’s an excuse to see Kristen Bell actually playing Lucy in person on the big screen. What do you think of the prospect of an Assassin's Creed film?
