Viking: Battle for Asgard
WORDS BY: Scott Butterworth

You know those generic summer action flicks? Each one has a vaguely unique premise, but they’re all essentially the same: not much depth, plenty of clichés, but still fun to watch. Well, that’s roughly what Viking: Battle for Asgard feels like. It follows the action/adventure formula pretty much to the letter, but it’s an enjoyable experience overall…mostly.
Viking’s vaguely unique premise is that you’re a Nordic badass chosen by the gods to lead an army against the vengeful goddess of the underworld and her legion of hellspawn. While this setup is pretty enticing, there’s almost no plot and character development, so you really don’t feel too invested in what’s going on.

What little story there is unfolds across three totally open islands. All you have to do to complete an objective is stroll over to a certain area and talk to someone, collect an item, or clear out a few bad guys. While this nonlinear approach sounds cool on paper, it makes everything sort of feel like a side quest, and it means you’ll spend a good deal of time just running (slowly) from place to place. And though you’ll sometimes be given compelling reasons to complete tasks, they just as often feel like pointless errands.
Just like an action movie, however, the violence makes it all worthwhile. Viking’s delightfully gory hack-and-slash combat is well executed—offering a satisfying selection of different moves that give you plenty of freedom and control. But the real stars of the show are the battle sequences in which you lead an army of literally hundreds of NPCs into full-on raging wars. It’s just a shame that there’s so much filler between the fights.

I actually enjoyed this game, i was very sim iliar to Fable and a nice little filler while i wait for Fable 2 to hit. It did however have its downfalls, it sucked having to run around to find The Leystones and if you trekked for a half hour and died without finding one close to the point of death it was a long walk back, but it kept me entertained for a few days, all in all i would recommend it

Finally wrapped this up after a struggle in the final boss area. Fire sucks, kids. Be careful.
Couldn't agree with you more, Scott, you nailed it on the head. The combat is not particularly deep, but there is an array of worthwhile moves that work better in specific situations... That is until you upgrade Jump + Power for the second time. EXPLOSION. The open-endedness of the islands was very much an illusion. It was like a funnel, but it was just really wide, and you could move around the edges a bit. You're still forced down a singular path following specific objectives in a more specific order, but it still works well.
Until that god damn final boss. Ugh.

I couldn't agree more with metalhead, this game is fun and full of surprises. It's an open world with massive battles and huge monsters, putting aside its bad frame rate. I would highly recommend to anyone that enjoys single player games. Xbox Gamertag : Dpboy . Peace.

Well I got the game yesterday and played it for a few hours. I really like it.
It has a quest system in place and an open world (island) to explore. Killing bad guys is fun and brutal. The graphics are top notch for xbox 360 and this is a game I am very glad I didnt take the 6.5 reviewers score to heart and tried it my self.
I would give it an 8.5. Don't miss this game if your a hack n slash fan who is even remotely interested in the concept, you won't be disapointed you tried it.

Well, 6.5 is still decent. And since I'm only renting anyway, I couldn't care less about replay value or multiplayer. Just let me chop off some heads and I'm good. :)

6.5 ouch! I have this game arriving today from gamefly and still can't wait to play it. Ever since I heard about this game I have been excited to play it and hopefully I think it's better than a 6.5 score .. I don't care about multiplayer or onlineor replay value what so ever and that seems to be one of the reviewers issues ... I'll post back here after I play it later today.

From what I've read, the game seems very much structured like "Assassin's Creed" - a bunch of side quests leading up to a bit of excitement, rinse, repeat. All leading up to some big, final battle. And while the main character of AC COULD move pretty fast if he wanted to, most times he's forced to move slowly, sometimes excruciatingly so.
Did I mention that I happen to LOVE AC? It's the perfect stoner game. This one sounds like it could be, too!
