Vigilante 8 Arcade

WORDS BY: Mitch Dyer

This remake of the original PlayStation’s other seminal vehicular-combat series doesn’t stray from the established formula, but Vigilante 8 Arcade doesn’t really need to. After 10 years, the explosion-heavy action is still enjoyable...if you can tolerate some archaic issues.

Problems — like a confusing camera (which, for whatever reason, is significantly better in mega-fun split-screen play), slippery vehicles that clip through the ground, and a mere five arenas on which to destroy opponents — make Vigilante 8 a questionable $10 purchase. But competitive smack-talk-athons and co-op multiplayer are a blast thanks to the diverse array of attacks. Sharp weaponry features four firing modes for missiles, rockets, mines, and mortars, which mixes up how each battle goes down whether you’re solo against bots or teamed up with a bud. Unfortunately, all those issues stop this game from excelling, but we’re hoping the nostalgic afterglow of Vigilante 8’s re-release could help reinvigorate this tragically neglected genre.

On Xbox Live Arcade
6.0
  • Both solo and multiplayer are wicked-fun; awesome weapons with four firing modes.
  • Only five levels; falling through the world is weak.
  • Crummy controls and camera.
  • Could John T be more of a racial stereotype?
COMMENTS:

Like myself, Dan's disappointed as far as I could gather. The game felt slowed down, and really, falling through floors and smashing through walls sucks in a remake of a ten year old game where that wasn't really present. The camera was something we both took issue with, but I still think that Vigi8 is maaaaaad fun. I can't speak for Dan about whether he liked it enough to buy it, but if I had the time I'd totally play this all over again. The 6.0 is a "low" score in comparison to what some might have expected, but the game's flaws and niche appeal are what hinder it most... That niche group will enjoy the it though. :)

bet dans not too happy

I played this game a lot back in the day. But there was another title called "Rogue Trip: Vacation 2012 in the same "driver shooter" category that was way more memorable.

I think if they offered these games, that are just basically "ports" with no extra polish, for $5 they would be better off in the long run.

Maybe this is a genre better left in the past.
