Tron
WORDS BY: Dan Amrich
When you only had so many quarters in your pocket, Tron was a great arcade value, offering four games for the price of one: blasting the digital world’s pesky grid bugs, hunting enemy tanks in a cyberspace maze, breaking blocks to enter the Master Control Program’s inner sanctum, and the signature right-angle racing of the lightcycle chase. And somehow, 25 years later, those tiny tasks still throw down plenty of challenge.

While you’ll miss the novelty of a glowing blue joystick and an analog spinner, setting the controls to “Absolute Aim” (preset C or D) gives you enough precision to do battle on the Game Grid. The sharp graphical updates feel unobtrusive, and Wendy Carlos’ music has wisely been left untouched. Some standard multiplayer modes (and one cruel new one that forces the trailing player’s game to speed up) round out a package that’s still a surprisingly good value.
