Ticket to Ride

WORDS BY: Nathan Edwards

In this straightforward board-game port, players use colored Train Cards drawn from a central deck to complete railroad lines between North American cities. Cities are connected via colored dashes, which represent the number and color of Train Cards required to claim that stretch of track. Destination Tickets award points for linking distant cities. You can sabotage other players by claiming tracks they need, but you’ll usually be too busy trying to build your own lines.

Turns unfold steadily but relentlessly, and since you can perform only one action per turn, every moment is significant. We found ourselves at the edge of our seats with Ticket to Ride, hoping our rivals didn’t take certain stretches of track before we could. Yes, on the edge of our seats during a board game! In fact, we got so set on completing our Destination Tickets that the end of the game nearly always caught us by surprise.

It’s nice to feel engrossed by a board game again. With Catan, Carcassonne, and now this, it seems they’re turning out to be one of Live Arcade’s specialties.

7.0
  • Faithful board-game translation without the clean-up.
  • Music is charmingly old-school.
  • You can perform just one action per turn; occasional frustration.
  • Should we really have to buy an expansion pack to get more than one board?
