Supreme Commander

Adapting the PC’s largest and most complex RTS game to the Xbox 360 is nothing if not ambitious, and Aspyr and Hellbent Games have done a pretty capable job with Gas Powered Games’ Supreme Commander. Though its new gamepad-centric control scheme can test your dexterity and patience, the real-time strategy game reinterprets the PC version’s impressive scope without any noticeable backpedaling.

The 2007 PC release (designer Chris Taylor’s belated follow-up to his epic Total Annihilation) offered an ambitious Napoleonic-scale depiction of a future galactic “Infinite War” between the robotic armed forces of the United Earth Federation, Cybran Nation, and Aeon Illuminate factions. The Xbox 360 game re-creates this impressive breadth with the same super-sized maps (often teeming with *thousands* of on-screen units) gussied up with a customized gamepad-to-TV control scheme and interface.

The three-faction, 18-mission single-player campaign — a 30- to 60-hour opus of increasingly taxing strategic challenges — faithfully mirrors the PC experience, but Hellbent has tossed in three additional experimental units and fleshed out its turbulence-free Xbox Live game with a pair of new gameplay modes. Some inexplicable (albeit infrequent) moments of lunacy notwithstanding, the adjustable campaign and skirmish A.I. provides formidable opposition.  

To keep framerates from bogging down too badly with all this on-screen activity, the dev team also applied a 500-unit (per team) cap. And it marginally — yet visibly — downgraded the PC game’s high-end graphics. These tweaks likely helped matters, but there are still a few too many slowdowns for our taste.

Ignoring the PC-to-console porting issues, RTS games simply don’t get any bigger, deeper, or more voluminous than this. So if you missed out on the Windows chapter, the Xbox 360 edition of Supreme Commander will keep you maneuvering, battling, and strategizing for weeks.

please lets all help the gaming comunity and really show that the review is not fair,''An 8'' come on xbox online i take you guys on you credibility serious but i bought the game and it's ok not great or a 8 so be serious i know you guys get paid for what you do wich is give us a real insight onto a game review not to lure people into buying something you teel us is good just because it's on your system what you guys are doing is bad for the game industry why? Because of the sales the game gets here comes another sh**ty sequel just because the game sold well.Well i'm one of the few gamers that knows the bussines side of games and game companies.All i ask is to have a honest review maybe i'll get the game and take you guys serious about the rest of your reviews on your mag wich by the way it's cheaper at your nearest library.eleven bucks for 3/4 of the mag to be covered in ads and or cell games wich are ridiculously lousy come on guys this is just the start you wikk do good and you hear good from me do bad and you know the rest!!!...to be continued

Well i always do the smart thing by looking up reviews from other places other than anything related from the xbox site's.I bought this game from reading reviews from the pc version and who does'nt get all hyped up on this awesome game.the game is ok not a 8 the game starts lagging or slowing down before you hit half of the unit limit you build,when you zoom out or in the sound effects really start breaking up,you can maybe cut the game some slack and just overlook some of the flaws in the game.sh**t i cant afford the pc capable of playing the game so i don't mind the first time flaws from supreme commander on 360. rent first even for hardcore rts gamers or look up even four to five reviews from places not related to anything xbox to get the real deal.I like it but what i heard and read from the pc version it's maybe a 7.0-7.8 maybe the next supcom can really shine on my box. piese out

Well I'm definately going to look into renting it at least. Waiting for Halo Wars or any other good RTS (Tom Clancy's EndWar for example) is hard to do.

So, honestly why the difference in reviews? Did you guys encounter the same problems the other reviewers did? It's hard to go by any of these reviews with such a difference between them all..

Yeah, we were really surprised by all the low scores elsewhere for this one. There were some oddities in the review build that we took the time to confirm were fixed in the final retail version; we're wondering if we're the only ones who did that....

It's crazy how much different scores are from different sites. Like this game everybody gave it a crappy score pretty much except you guys. Most of the time I agree with your scores but I will always try the game out no matter what. Like when you guys gave Dark Sector a bad score and I actually had a good time with the game. We'll have to see how it goes with this game.
