Rainbow Six Vegas 2
WORDS BY: Paul Curthoys

Everyone goes back to Vegas — once you’ve been there, one of Sin City’s vices always tempts you to return. So it’s not surprising that Rainbow Six is no different, but it is disappointing how little Ubisoft’s realistic squad shooter has learned from its past mistakes. Fortunately, the excellent-as-always multiplayer and co-op make up for the single-player’s missteps in a big way.
As usual with this series, multiplayer is king, and Rainbow Six Vegas 2 has kept its focus on razor-sharp action. The visuals are now on par with the single-player scenery, and the terrific complement of maps is as well-designed as always. Our favorite is the tongue-in-cheek “Convention Center,” which is set in the middle of a MLG tournament and lets you shoot the hell out of an E3-like environment. Talk about developer wish fulfillment! New modes like Team Leader (your team respawns only while your leader’s alive) and Demolition (plant or defuse bombs) won’t earn points for originality, but fans will revel in the hardcore action that requires high skill levels and expert knowledge of each map’s corners and lines of fire.

Thanks to some wise refinements, co-op’s much more enjoyable than it was in the first Vegas. It’s only two-player (as opposed to four the last time), but the trade-off is that you now get all the story elements and can also drop in (or out) of a friend’s single-player campaign at any time. It’s hands-down the best way to play Vegas 2 — it’s loads more fun to plan assaults with a friend, plus you both have to die at the same time before it’s game over, men.
Speaking of dying, Rainbow hasn’t learned some key lessons yet, and the horrible checkpoint-save system is the biggest offender. In the sixth mission, for example, you go it alone against a vast horde, and we suggest you connect one of those Wii wrist straps to your controller so you don’t chuck it at your dog. Not only is the entire level an agonizing death march through a tedious factory environment (why does a squad shooter make us go solo against insane odds?), but the checkpoints are also spaced brutally far apart. We’ve ranted plenty before about how save-anywhere is absolutely essential in a modern game, so we’ll confine ourselves to this: If you’re going to force us to swallow a lousy save system, at least have the decency to be excessively generous with the checkpoints. Because these days on 360, we quite literally have better games to play.
That said, Vegas 2’s single-player has its moments of brilliance. We loved the dash through the backyards of suburban Vegas and the terrific assault on the Rec Center, where you fast-rope into the middle of a firefight. As frightened civilians cower nearby, you have to sprint for cover, clear out an entrenched enemy position, and then dispose of reinforcements that rappel in. Later in that level, this sequel earns its “2” most when you take down a library. Instead of just getting a couple of different doors to set up on, here you get three stories. We chose to head to the roof and snipe while sending our boys in on the ground floor. After a frag-and-clear, we provided cover and directed traffic through the skylight in one of the game’s most thrilling firefights.
Other levels are far less exciting. It’s weird to say this, but Vegas 2 should be a shorter game. Some of the levels are tacked-on filler (the exfiltration of the convention center is the kind of snooze that belongs on the cutting-room floor), and with the A.I. operating mostly at the none-too-bright level (charging headlong at the world’s top commandos is not a good survival strategy), you’ll sometimes wish you could fast-forward.
The best way to describe Vegas 2 is that it’s not really a full sequel — it’s just the rest of the first game. The refinements are impressive but small (we love-love-love shooting through cover), the multiplayer and co-op are fine-tuned more sweetly than ever, and if that’s enough to get your trigger finger twitching, you’ll be as happy as a tourist hitting an all-you-can-eat buffet.

One of the top five worst review's yet. Hells Highway received a higher score then this? That is crap, and unrealistic, and is just boring. This is an amazing game yet again, heck it's Rainbow 6!!!

single player gets repetetive to me at times, where it is shoot, kill, shoot, kill, but the multipayer and the aces system is the reason to keep playing and ultimatly buying it.

Okay. this game is a very good game. admittedly not as amazing multiplayer as CoD4 or Halo but its right up there with them. the single player i thoroughly enjoyed for the most part but when i went back through it 2 more times on the harder difficulties it became kinda redundant. my only real problem with it(and it wasn't the save system which i actually found quite pleasant) was that there are 3 main skills that are kinda like challenges in CoD4. those are marksman, CQB, and Assault. You can get them to 20 for each one by performing different kills, like blind fire kill, kill with grenade, etc. but in a matter of 3 days i have all 3 skills to 20 and am halfway up the rank system(I think like a gunnery sergeant or something.) i wish that they could've made it so that those 3 particular skills could go to maybe 50 each. it would be more fun. but in general i would say verdict=GO BUY IT!

i see the point that all the reviewers are giving about this being the same as the last one, and thats pretty much the reason for the 8.0, but wat if i never played the first one and the 2 makes no impact on me, wouldn't it be a much higher grade for first timers. i got this and i love it, nothing seems to much like the last game b/c for me there wasn't. You should include something about it being good for ppl who didnt play the first.

Why wasn't this sold as DLC for about $20? Ubisoft has a way of making you pay twice for one game. vegas 2, graw 2 same game, new maps They haven't done anything groundbreaking since Double Agent.

I enjoyed the first rainbow 6 and am enjoying this one even more with the P.E.C. in singleplayer mode.(My job gives me very little time to play online like 3 days a month) So far the only problem I have with the game is, It may be the first game that has an unobtainable acheivment. At least if you played and ranked up any on the first R6. The achievment is getting the rank of private first class and maybe officer (I have no knowledge of what ranks qualify as officer) I only hope that when i reach elite the game realizes that it did not give me my PFC achievment and rewards it to me then.

@ Paul OXM: I agree, that's why I've been going by the reviews of OXM since day one. I posted that comment because I felt the need to point out this little demon among gamers and other critics. It wasn't neccessarily towards the OXM staff, because you treat every game fairly. If it's crap, I trust you guys to inform me before I waste my money. And because of that, I've got a boatload of great games going back to my original Xbox. I just see people becoming jaded, I guess. Someone like me will have days of fun with kick ass games, recent and new. Others will just pick apart tech issues and what-not, sounding like a nagging wife of 30 years. Anyway, you guys at OXM are the only ones I listen to come review time. Keep up the good work.

I'm sorry, but this game is insanely awesome, not a phrase I would often use, but there you go. Terrorist Hunt is massively improved, especially in single player (hello controllable AI allies), the campaign is admittedly irritating with the checkpoints but the way I see it is that is a good thing. Yes I did say that. The more times you have to go through a hard section the more points you get. A bit obscure I know but there you are. I haven't tried all multiplayer modes yet but from what I have seen that aspect is razor sharp.
That said, there are some flaws, mostly when you compare this to Halo 3. I know they are entirely different games but where is theater in Vegas 2? And forge? Forge would not be very useful in Vegas except in making entirely new maps as we can on foundry.
Overall, I would give this a nine, it isn't perfect, but for my money it beats COD 4, in realism, gameplay and customization.
You also neglected to mention Vegas 2's customization. I've rarely seen such levels of customization in a game, and never in a FPS. This is a great game guys, I would thoroughly recommend this.

Hey Garuda, I think it's a great game to play -- that's how 8.0 is defined our ratings scale. And yeah, I wouldn't wanna hang out with people who exist to bitch about games. The last thing we are is haters -- we're all here because we love games way more than we should. That said, the whole point of a review is to say what's good and what's bad so it can help readers decide what they want to buy and play.

You know, I think Vegas 2 is a good game to play. I know that no game will EVER be perfect. But I have noticed a growing trend not just with critics, but also among my fellow gamers. It seems that when a new game comes upon the scene, everyone is instantly looking to find what "glaring flaws" it may have just so it can be something to bitch about for two weeks until the next game comes out. EVERY game is gonna have a minor flaw or two. But geez people, they're GAMES. If they have cool and interesting stories (that make sense), and it's very fun to play, with great graphics and controls, who really cares about the little stuff?

thePhoenix -- I'd say you should find an copy of the first Vegas and start there if you're interested in the series. Story-wise, Vegas 2 won't make a lick of sense without finishing the first game. Gameplay-wise, though, you could easily start shootin' away and have a good time. And I wouldn't give up COD4, but Vegas 2 is much more realistic and deliberate, which has its charms...
Axe -- Yup, you nailed it.

Basically Paul,to sum it up,Rainbow Six Vegas 2 is nothing but an expansion, and it is what GRAW 2 was to GRAW. God,I'm so glad I got Condemned 2! (I didn't like the first Vegas anyway...)

Do you think it's worth buying if you didn't have the old one? You say it has a lack of new things, but are the old ones still good, or should I just find a cheap copy of the old Vegas?

Great review! I figured it would be like this. Great but nothing too new and ground breaking. Good enough to deserve a purchase in a few weeks for me.

Nope Bullet Waster, it was 2 points off for a lot more reasons than just checkpoints -- as the review says, some very weak single-player levels and a general lack of whiz-bang new features make it less impressive than it should be. And also remember that our ratings scale defines 8.0 as a "great" game, so I'm hardly saying it's a bad game -- just not as excellent as it could and should be.

I think I'll still probably pick up this game. I've probably dealt with worse save systems before, and I'm a very patient guy.
