NHL 2K9

WORDS BY: Paul Curthoys

Reruns aren’t a bad thing, especially if you catch an old favorite. And the best way to get a feel for NHL 2K9 is to pretend you’re a Trekkie. Playing 2K Sports’ latest hockey game is like tuning in to one of your favorite episodes from the Original Series: fuzzily pleasant at first, always sorta fun…but eventually you nod off because you’ve seen it so many times before.

NHL 2K9’s fast, smooth, and simple controls let you whip the puck around the ice, set up highlight-reel plays over and over again, and light the red lamp so many times you’ll feel sorry for the poor, tired thing. It’s capable, accessible, and very playable arcade hockey, and if you’re the kind of gamer who isn’t serious about hockey in that I-own-15-team-jerseys kinda way, you’ll have a blast.

Even then, we don’t think many of you will lose yourself in this rink for months or even weeks. Yes, the graphics are sharply upgraded, the new 12-player online matches are wicked fun, the Franchise mode is deep and detailed, and the silly Zamboni mini-game somehow mesmerized us. But with NHL 09 turning in such an all-star performance, this exercise in nostalgia is enjoyable…but unnecessary.

  • The crazy Zamboni mini-game's a hoot!
  • Competent, fun arcade hockey...
  • ...but "same-old" gameplay made us sleepy. And eventually kinda bored.
  • If EA buys Take-Two, will this be the last of the NHL 2K series?
COMMENTS:

Yeah 09 is the way to go. Some really cool new features.

Ive never really got into the 2K series, but IMO this game is for kids and EA 09 take a bit more skill and plus its way more realistic.

I dont understand why 2K is even bothering making this game, the graphics are HORRIBLE (wish im sure they are aware of) and in their ad they say "with pick up and play controls" well I picked it up and I couldnt play if my life depended on it.(mostly because I play EA 09)

Kids go buy it
Hockey fans and players go buy EA NHL 09
