"Why don't I like Fallout 3? I just am not getting into it. I'm about 4 hours in and I'm supposed to be looking for a radio station. I am taking my time, doing some exploring and really trying to enjoy it. While I'm playing though, all I can think about is wanting to play something else."

NBA 2K9
WORDS BY: Evan Lahti
Boston’s colors coat NBA 2K9’s cover with good reason — like the reigning champs, minor tweaks are all it needs to contend. Modest upgrades to the skill stick, franchise mode, and A.I. aren’t enough to throw 2K9 off-balance because its core on-court action is so solid.

Realistic animations anchor that gameplay. When LeBron drives the lane and fades away for a jumper in the paint, or when Tony Parker stumbles around a pick, every elbow, jersey, and sweatband organically articulates their momentum. Better yet, it paves a path for pacing that lets you manufacture buckets one at a time and use your teammates with simple-yet-deep playcalling and controls.

Even if the A.I.’s a little irresponsible in the paint, it’s more aware overall, and the game’s detailed sliders help iron out any gameplay wrinkles perceived by the player. Presentation is the only other outlier: NBA Live 09’s showy signature playcalling stands out against 2K9’s lack of stat overlays, meager commentary segments, and bargain-basement menus. Still, it’s hard to hold the lack of flash against such a fundamentally sound experience.
