NASCAR 09

WORDS BY: Andy Mahood

NASCAR 08 may have broken new ground with its impressive high-fidelity physics, but it was a frustrating leap for casual racers without access to a wheel-and-pedal setup…and a lot of practice time. One year and several wrench-twists later, NASCAR 09 rolls off the trailer with a winning chassis for newbie and veteran alike.

That’s because the latest release is fully configurable to suit any controller you throw at it, as well as any degree of gamer patience and skill. Experienced racers can switch on Pro Mode with any or all driving aids disabled, while first-timers can employ a friendlier driving model with helpful assists like traction control, invulnerability, and anti-lock brakes that keep you on the black stuff (the car can even brake for you). The A.I. drivers, although prone to occasional judgment and pit-strategy errors, are similarly configurable to run at pro or rookie speed — or to dynamically adjust themselves to your pace.

This newfound adaptability gives casual racers access to some of the best driving physics on the platform. Hosted by Jeff Gordon, NASCAR 09 features full driver and team licensing from the current Sprint Cup, Nationwide, and Craftsman Truck series, as well as two dozen lovingly rendered tracks from the 2008 schedule. If real-deal liveries aren’t your thing, an inventive new online Paint Booth component lets you import and export templates to external PC editing programs.

Even if you’ve never owned a Budweiser jacket, NASCAR 09’s slick physics and engaging new racing options — including some addictive Sprint mini-challenges and absolutely seamless 14-player action on Live — will have you burning donuts in Victory Lane in record time.

ON Xbox 360

easportsworld.com has all of the info you need on creating and uploading cars to NASCAR 09. The big key is that on easportsworld.com you have to have an online persona name that matches your xbox live gamertag. I registered with easportsworld and then went back into nascar 09 and went to the paintbooth area. After all of the info screens told me where to go I went back and signed into easportsworld.com, went to my profile and there was already a persona waiting for me that matched my gamertag. Once that is done, chose nascar from the banner at the top and go to the build a car area. There is a window to download templates, upload driver photo and upload your painted car templates. Car templates can be painted in applications such as paint.net and Adobe Photoshop. All the info you need is there. Also go to the easports nascar forums as people are starting to post links to cars that they've made.

Hey, i'm a fan of nascar and i have 08. I only have one question. It says that you can upload your pics of cars, (i have already downloaded the template :) ) and then make your car look like that. How do you upload them on your 360?

I just don't get the whole hype of Nascar. I've been to it a few times and just don't think it's that great. Hell I don't even remember the last time I tried a Nascar game. To each his own.

Boy,I sure love to turn left all the time

should please all the red-necks out there......how exciting can driving round in circles be, the demo was a little tough, perhaps cos it was so boring? hmmmmm

Thanks Paul, I haven't gotten a black flag, yet. :)

That I don't know, but there should be a place in the Options menu where you can turn off yellow & black flags. Yellows are when everybody goes slow while they clean a wreck off the track; black means you drove like a thug and are getting busted.

Does this game have a place where you can learn the rules of Nascar? I played the demo and was confused when all of the AI was driving in a organized strait line and I was crushing through them getting yellow flags at the same time.

Or Photoshop. Or any PC-based image-manipulation software. I believe it spits out a jpg or bmp that you can have your way with.

"new online Paint Booth component lets you import and export templates to external PC editing programs"

what do you mean by this, you mean like Microsoft Paint? you're saying you can export templates to Microsoft Paint?
