"Why don't I like Fallout 3? I just am not getting into it. I'm about 4 hours in and I'm supposed to be looking for a radio station. I am taking my time, doing some exploring and really trying to enjoy it. While I'm playing though, all I can think about is wanting to play something else."

Hellboy: The Science of Evil

WORDS BY: Cameron Lewis

Hellboy’s six beat-’em-up missions last just over an hour each, so the burly hero’s trip from the Carpathian Mountains to von Klempt’s castle is pretty brief. The art direction is decent but needlessly drenched in shadow, and monsters range from genetically modified apes to cavern-filling worms. Sadly, there’s remarkably little to do with all of these ingredients but pummel foes until the next magical barrier lifts — and there’s no shortage of them.

With 11 combo attacks, short-lived melee weapons pulled from the environment, and nine unusual brands of handgun ammo, Hellboy has breadth, but any combat depth dies when monsters can’t negotiate the simplest of obstacles, let alone put up meaningful resistance. Co-op actually manages to be less fun than going alone, since neither Abe Sapien nor Liz Sherman is much fun to play as, and you have to unlock the same levels all over again for no apparent reason. Diehard fans might forgive, but everyone else should just forget.

On Xbox 360
4.0
  • Some cool creatures and cinematic moments.
  • Incredibly repetitive combat, even for a beat-’em-up.
  • Monsters are about as smart as bricks.
  • All these Nazis, and not a single swastika?
COMMENTS:

What are you talking about Mitch? Hellboy is a popular comic. The push is because after the first film more people were interested in it, its a good franchise. This game on the other hand... not so much...

You might be right, blastem14. On the other hand, the days when it was sufficient to simply sent goons mindlessly charging and flailing at the player went out with Doom 2, I think. :)

i just noticed, cameron lewis is really hard on AI's in games.

I'm still surprised by the push behind Hellboy. The first flick was bearable, but I was predisposed to like it because a) Mike Mignola's comics are cool. Not good, but cool. and b) demons punching Nazis is also cool. The sequel confuses me, and after releasing two animated films, so does this game.

Is Hellboy as relevant as they want him to be? Do they think he's popular?

Because, uh, he's not.
