Halo 3 Legendary Map Pack
WORDS BY: Ryan McCaffrey

Oh-so-familiar, and oh-so-good.
“It feels like home.”
That’s how senior editor Dan Amrich perfectly described Halo 3’s Lockout remake, titled Blackout. Indeed, the geometrically identical reissue of our favorite swords playground (only the setting has changed — from snow-blasted mountainside to seaside oil-drilling platform) is even better thanks to Halo 3’s sword-clashing mechanic, while the pack’s other retooled classic map fulfills a longstanding Halo wish.
Avalanche is a new take on the original Halo’s icy CTF classic, Sidewinder. Added are liberal uses of man-cannons (and Hornets!), while the Battle Rifle fills in admirably for Halo’s über-pistol.
The lone original map in the pack, Ghost Town, works nicely as a mid-sized Rockets, Slayer, or Territories playground. Unfortunately, it’s but an all-star overshadowed by a pair of returning legends.
VERDICT: BUY

With Sidewinder in hand, our classic wishlist is now fulfilled.

Avalanche is the reason to buy it, if you play team objective on it, the game will last for a long time increasing the worth of the overall experience

speaking of cod4, whats with the double-standard on using old maps? You guys had a problem with Broadcast, which is based on the single-player level - I thought you liked the newsroom shootout? This pack has two old maps...so what's the difference?

Think of it this way by buying the new maps you not only get to enjoy customs and dlc matchmaking early you get bungie pro for 4 months and can play ranked swat whitch is legendary dlc required.

These maps pretty much reinvigorated Halo 3 for me. After the lackluster release of the first DLC maps, I feel that these maps are worthy of the Legendary title and definately deserve putting in the Halo disc again.

the guy who is supremely pissed was supremely uninformed. Bungie never made it a secret that the heroic maps would be free later down the road. I dont really care about halo, so i am going to wait until the Legendary pack is free too.

If I spent months creating something at work, I would want to be paid for it. I'm just happy they were nice enough to drop the price so that my friends, who do not play as much as I do, could download them. No matter how much anyone complains, it makes no sense to distribute them for free initially.

Look I paid for the Heroic Map Pack. Which until recently has been pretty much useless to me. Now everybody has the damn thing for free. Did i get compensated because I was a big enough fan of the game to go out and buy the maps early no I GOT SCREWED!!!!! Look bungie and microsoft if your just going to release these packs for free down the line why not release them for free RIGHT NOW! I dont know about others but i was supremely pissed off when i found out the heroic map pack was now FREE and I will be waiting for this pack to do the same. Its just not worth purchasing now.

What, you don't think that Bungie makes money off of the maps? What everyone needs to remember is that while Bungie is a great studioin terms of supporting us with great content and online play, they still are in the business of selling video games. It took months of work to make the maps, they are going to sell them at a high enough price to make some profit off of them. MS does set the price, but Bungie probably does not mind as much as they say, and frankly, these maps are more than worth my $10 (and they will be free when the next ones come out too I'd be willing to bet).

Just to correct some of the misinformed in this comment section, but Bungie DOES NOT charge for the maps, MS does. Bungie has even out right said they wanted to release them for free, but you know MS, got to make money off of everything. Bungie is very loyal to its fans.

While i did download these maps, and i like them way more then the heroic maps, i do want to bring into question Bungie's integrity. I know its what everyone wanted, but i already payed for lockout/blackout once, and somewhat avalanche. I almost feel like remakes should be free. I think if it was Epic Games, then remakes of there old maps would be free, but Bungie realizing that they can are going to nickel and dime us. i'm absolutly fine with paying for new maps, Ghost Town, but i really can't justify paying for stuff i've already payed for, but i did it anyway.

Nevermind...I could have sworn that I saw the CoD4 Variety Map Pack with a 7.0 next to it...

I haven't played Halo 3 in a while, so I don't think I'll pick these up until they're free. But why did you review the CoD4 Variety Map Pack with a number system, but this one with the Buy/Fanboy/Don't system?

I'm not sure if I am going to buy these map packs. I mean only one new one and two old revised maps. It seems like Bungie is trying to take advantage of their fans. I'll just till its free.
