Death Tank

WORDS BY: Ryan McCaffrey

As essentially an HD real-time remake of the early ’90s turn-based war game Scorched Earth, Death Tank delivers bite-sized fun against bots or friends. With each player controlling a tank, you set your cannon’s trajectory and intensity with the left stick, then fire at and obliterate your opponents with the right trigger. Various power-ups like jump jets or nukes — purchased between the 10-30-second rounds using money earned from killing foes — aid your quest for victory (as does blasting the terrain out from under them), and the six-player action is raucous. But basic and advanced 20-round campaigns (which only take 10-15 minutes to complete) are all you get for solo play. At $15, Death Tank is ludicrously overpriced.

On Xbox Live Arcade
6.0
  • Awesomely fun multiplayer.
  • Single player lacking significantly.
  • Absurd price point.
  • What happened to cheap and fun XBLA games?
COMMENTS:

I played the demo and I don't know, I just think it's bad timing. With GTAIV L&D for 20 bucks this just doesn't seem enough for what they're asking.

"...essentially an HD real-time remake of the early ’90s turn-based war game Scorched Earth"

Really, it's more of an HD real-time remake of the mid ’90s real-time war games Death Tank & Death Tank Zwei.

In any case, Death Tank Zwei was the best multiplayer game on the Sega Saturn, and one of the best multiplayer games of the 90s.

Maybe I'm just being nostalgic, but $15 isn't much for a game as good as this.

I haven't played the game, as soon as I saw the price I dismissed the game. having read this review it looks and sounds like worms.

As for the price, I blame the first Penny Arcade game. the moment I saw 1200 msp I knew it was going to become a trend. (I'm sure I wasn't the only one)

As a side note, when are we going to get some xbox originals that are worth playing.

i was hoping for an HD version of Pocket Tanks but after playing the demo i now know this game is definitely no Pocket Tanks.

Mistershooterman, do you *honestly* have to pay for your own copy of the game? Your email address suggests you work for the game's developer (Snowblind), so I kinda doubt it...?

Sigh. Yes, we actually played the game. A lot. No, we never "slap together reviews to fill space." And geez, if you have extra $5 bills laying around to spend on games that haven't lived up to their price tag...can I have some?

Wow, Mitchy, that's what I call bringing the heat. But honestly, isn't that what the free demos are for. No one is asking anyone to take a review as gospel, when you can try the game for FREE. $15 is an expensive price when for the same money, there are many better games out there.

Yeah, OXM. How could you have claimed to play a videogame before release? IS THAT EVEN POSSIBLE? How dare you describe the gameplay, give me history, detail weapons and time intervals, tell me how many players/missions I get for the price, and then PRETEND to have even PLAYED THE GAME. I think I'm being pretty reasonable here without providing any substantial evidence to back up my claims of an ignorant review process. Jeez. What a crazy batch of kids you are...

Did you guys actually play this game or did you just slap this together at the last minute to fill space? I just tried the demo and it was pretty good. I am buying it as soon as my point card shows up in the mail. I wish it was 800 points, but it's not. Still its really only $5.00 more.

I'm not sure $5.00 ever qualifies as "ludicrously overpriced."

I just played Death Tanks today and I see 4 single player modes. There is basic and advanced combat , like you mentioned, but also Arcade mode and Created games. It also looks like there is a ton of different multiplayer modes as well.
