Dead Space
WORDS BY: Meghan Watt
A distress call muffled by static, a strangely silent spaceship, and then a frantic dash for your life — that’s a good start to immersive horror. Mindlessly plodding through rusty corridors on 10 hours of FedEx missions — that’s not quite the middle we had in mind.

When a support team crash-lands on the eerie USG Ishimura, engineer Isaac Clarke finds himself separated from his two surviving crewmates. Alone and apparently taking a vow of silence, Isaac has no choice but to help his team escape the ship via 12 seemingly endless scavenger hunts, like finding the key to access the mining bay to destroy the tethers to release the asteroid to launch the SOS.
But like a Russian nesting doll, the overarching scavenger hunt leads to even tinier hunts. While partaking in dozens of wild-goose chases, you must fend off numerous “necromorphs,” the terribly deformed animated dead that infest Ishimura. But the ammo you use to battle these foes comes in small quantities, so you’ll find yourself ravaging lockers and crates every few seconds due to Dead Space’s fascination with containers. And if you prefer that your weapons shoot more than BB pellets, you’ll need to scrounge up a few power nodes to upgrade them. Or you can purchase ammo and nodes for credits, which you’ll also find conveniently placed about the vessel. Even the story lies inside something: the logs scattered across the ship (though these devices seem to be the Ishimura’s only rare commodity).

But one ray of light shines through the musty corpse-ridden fog: the combat. What, a horror game with decent controls? Well, we’re not saying that Isaac has the most nimble feet, but clipping off the limbs of diverse foes certainly distracts from the monotony of each task. Since dismemberment causes the most damage, you must aim to hack off enemies’ arms before further riddling them with bullets. And nothing’s more frightening in the game than attempting to lop off a few arms of an adversary that happens to be gnawing on your neck.
A few standard scare tactics (dramatic music, flickering lights) and gory battles may satisfy hardened fans of horror, but loot-hunting and taxi missions will likely haunt your dreams more than the given monstrosities of death.

I know I will surely get banned for posting this but I just got a membership only to give a comment on that review.
That review is the worst piece of shit I have ever read. 6.5???? PLLEAAAASE!!!
This game is the most amazing thing that happened since Resident evil 4 and all other sites agree. Dont be fooled by that lame as shit review about one of the best game of the year. Go buy the game and see for yourself how much this review is absolutely not true and unfair.
Please fire the person who made that review.
Now you can ban me, I dont give a crap.

Game Informer - 9.25
GameSpot - 9
GameSpy 5/5
IGN - 8.7
Game Radar - 9
TeamXbox - 9
Game Revolution - A-
Even the PS3 mags gave higher.
Expect OXM UK to give higher to probably...
This review lacks depth, even Eurogamer gave detailed reasons (also higher).

OXM should do a feature towards the end of this year titled, "Top 5 Biggest Review Backlashes of '08" with the thoughts of the reviewer responsible for their particular game in the top 5, along with some of the comments posted here on the site for that particular game. It'd be pretty funny if you ask me.

Haha...wow. I'd like to say I've never disagreed with you guys more...but I have way too many times. I've personally played the game, and it sure as hell isnt' a 6.5. You're the only publication (beginning to obviously not be) worth reading that scored Dead Space less than an 8.5. All you talk about is achievements! I love playing videogames, but honestly; do you guys live in your mom's basements? this is pathetic.
ps. You guys suck. My subscription is done. Have fun hyping Gears and Fable 2 with your impossible 10 scores through the roof

I will be kind and say that I can only surmise they chose the wrong person to review this game?

wow, never really expected this. So, I assume that Fable 2 got 9.5 and Fallout 3 got a 10? Wow! this magazine rides on hype more than fanboys do. Consider me unsubscribed!
P.S. The only thing that I went for in the magazine was the disc, sorry but, you should fire the person that reviewed Dead Space. She doesn't know a thing about Horror games...

Well no duh. A LOT more, lol. I was talking about voting. Like they say, you don't vote, you give up your right to complain. Not that I didn't want to vote. I've been keeping up more with this election than any other in the past. But by the time I looked up the registration deadline for my state, it was the day prior. Go figure. I was pissed. My own damn fault though.

Although the low score is eyebrow raising, no doubt, I have more of a problem with the lack of content in the review. It has almost no insight or worthwhile critique. Eurogamer, the next lowest score to this one, at least has some depth and I get where they're coming from. This one just seems to not like the boring mission objectives. But then they like the combat, which is what you're doing 95% of the time (at least from what I can tell, playing it at PAX). Giving a game a low score is fine, but this just feels lazy and doesn't back up its score at all.
I see Gamespy just gave this game a perfect 5 stars. As the other reviews keep coming in, this one looks weaker and weaker.

Jeez, you guys gotta get off OXM's back. So they gave it a fairly bad score, well thats what a review is: their OPINION of the game. If they gave it a good score just because other publications are giving it high scores, then they aren't doing there jobs now are they?

This is ridiculous. Does everyone have to have the same opinion? I'm sure Meghan is being honest and I know she didn't read every other review on the internet and say to herself "Well, it seems alot of other people like it so maybe I should give it a higher score..." I personally read OXM because it DOESN'T seem biased. Other reviewers don't rate games as low as OXM does, which to me means they are not afraid to speak their minds and they don't do favors. Half of you probably haven't even played the game yet!! Just because you want it to have a high score doesn't give you the right to unload on the reviewer when it gets a low score.

Trust me, there's more games than just these two lightsaber. But I'd rather not take up the entire page with my block of text (although I already kinda did : P) I give'em my $24.95 a year, so I have the right to complain. Complaining about how the next 4 years go under the next president...now that's a different story ; )

WOW...they really dropped the ball on this one. This person must have never played Survival horror before. It is usually about scavenging to find ammo and health items in order to SURVIVE! Ever play RE4? The whole game was like that, and it was universally applauded. This "review" didnt really review the game. the "reviewer" glossed over the negatives and didnt really weigh in on whether or not the game was worthwhile. If you want to be taken SERIOUSLY as a reviewer, you need to do better than this. Go look at Metacritic.com and see how your review looks in comparison to the rest. You must be EMBARASSED.

This is a pathetic review. The reviewer has obviously read too far into any shortcomings in this game, while overlooking its positive aspects. I have no problem with a woman reviewing a game, I'm not a sexist, but this review seems like a child has been thrown to the wolves. Giving a review of a highly violent and intense game to anyone who seems to have never played a survival horror game before is just unacceptable.

Just clicked on the GamesRadar link and saw their review score of a 9 (Awesome). Seriously, this game is getting fantastic review scores all-around and OXM is sticking out like a sore thumb, which seems to be a trend here lately. Not in a good way I might add.

WARNING: LONG-ASS COMMENT
I was afraid to read this after reading the latest ill-toned preview of Dead Space in the magazine (regardless of the many more positive previews by everyone else up to this point), but like always, I hold out on reading every other review so I can check out the OXM review first and once again, I'm stunned. The average ratio on gamerankings.com is 87% as I type this. Hell, Gamespot even gave it a 9. This game is probably the one I'm most eager and excited to play. I even preordered the ridiculously priced Ultra L.E. because I've been following this game so closely since it was announced. I love horror and everything about this game fascinates me. I obviously haven't played the game yet as it's on its way to me now, but it just seems like the reviewer doesn't understand the concept of "survival horror" judging from the complaints. Watt must hate every single Resident Evil game to date. How about assigning these reviews to staff who actually realize what makes a specific genre fun to the fans who enjoy it (ex: Reyes mostly gets the JRPG reviews). That way us, the readers, can actually get a well-informed opinion on the game from what should be legitimate pros and cons.
And whatever happened to giving the readers more insight into how good or bad the graphics of a game are? Or the musical score and sound effects? Perhaps the story, which I would definitely like to hear more of an opinion on (maybe not from this reviewer :P)? These critical elements seem to hardly get much attention from you guys anymore, at least from a detail standpoint compared to the older issues of the magazine.
Sorry OXM, but after literally just beating Too Human (late to the party I know), another game that received a 6.5, I find myself completely disagreeing with half your reviews these days. Which is unfortunate because like I said at the start, I always wait to read OXM's reviews first because I trust you guys most for unbiased and legitimate reviews. I've found that trust slowly starting to fade.

When others are saying: "What's next, a 5/10 for Gears 2?"
I don't think that's how it works.
Any game with hype is given a good score to keep the fanboys and avid subscribers happy.
"Hey, guys look, _______ got a 9.5/10. I'm so proud of myself that my money went to a good cause."

Deal or No Deal?
-Capcom pays OXM. [God knows why]
-Resi 5 gets a 10/10.
-Dead Space fails in comparison.
-Capcom is happy and gets 5 more copies sold.
...A 6.5? Really? I've been a subscriber for over half a month, trusted your scores, [mind you all of the advice turned out good], and now, a game with no hype but undeniably good is given a 6.5? If I'm correct that means: "DECENT, an adequate game with something interesting to offer, but it has some truly significant issues. Otaku won't mind much, but the rest of the world will."

Sadly I think it all comes down to website hits. When people checking metacritic see such a low score that is far from the average they click to read what's up (like I did). I'm sure this might help put them on the map. Either way, I can't respect a review with only a few vague paragraphs on a title that looks like a hit on so many other sites. Does everyone at OXM agree with this review?

seriously, a 6.5? The notorious ign gave it an 8.7 for god's sake. noseguy's right. I thought dead space was the best horror game to come out since RE4. I thought Prey was cliche and standard (Meghan....), and i thought dead space was a great way to mix up the horror game scene. what's next, giving gears of war 2 a 5.0 and Fable II a 7.0?

Come on guys, a 6.5, really at least an 8.5 for this kinda straight up mad scary sweet combat sci fi blast! This is the scariest game of the year! And one of the best games yet!

What game did you play? Are you nuts? Prey is a 90 but Dead Space is a 65? Not even close. That game is great and even if you don't like the genre (first of all you shouldn't be reviewing it) its not a 65. The production values, story, sound design alone are an 80. . Wow all I can say is you screwed up big time. Time to finds a new reviewer.

You must be kidding! How does this get 6.5? It's easily the best looking game on the market at the moment, has a captivating story, is fun to play and scary as hell.
