Army of Two

WORDS BY: Dan Amrich

Army of Two was designed as two-player co-op shooter, which probably explains why the single-player campaign stinks. Whether you choose to play as Rios or Salem — the private military wrecking crew that must combine their elite talents to flip switches, open doors, and shoot terrorists in the head — you’ll find your partner to be infuriatingly stupid, frequently choosing the wrong priorities and tactics. (Not that your enemies are the sharpest crayons in the box, either: they sometimes sneak up from behind you, only to creep right past you en route to nearby cover.) In both single-player and co-op games, it’s all about teamwork: as one player draws enemy fire and attention (“Aggro”), the other can sneak around and flank. When your partner is injured, you’ll need to drag his ass to safety and patch him up, or you’re both dead. Unfortunately, levels from Somalia to China devolve into repetitive, blind-firing shooting galleries — and if you hear Salem say “bro” one more time, you have our permission to shoot him yourself.

Yet all this is tolerable — fun, even — when you play with a friend. The game was expressly designed for co-op play, but that makes the enemy A.I., poor vehicle mechanics, and the inability to save on command hard to accept, considering it costs you and a friend a combined $120 to play the game “as intended” over Xbox Live. But when you’re in this silly plot together, the annoyances melt into a testosterone-fueled buddy-action movie. With the satisfying Aggro mechanic, a useful GPS mapping system, and pretty, gritty graphics, co-op is the only way to play Army of Two — even if it’s still flawed and anticlimactic.

On Xbox 360
5.5
  • Testosterone-fueled fun with a friend…
  • …but only with a friend.
  • Both enemy and ally A.I. are sadly undertrained.
  • Was the original version (Army of Two almost came out in November) better or worse?
COMMENTS:

And if they put in a curb stomp then it would pretty much be gears of war.

One of the best games Ive played this year!!

Plot original.
Character development awesome. IE Clyde.
Graphics awesome.
Cutscenes amazing.
Explosions blew.
AI Partner frustrating.
AI tolerable.
CO OP freakin AWESOME.
Online play.... Eh.

My buddies and I had a blast playing this game. The fact that Salem was tiny compared to Rios was entertaining to say the least. The humor was great. I had to have spent nearly an hour overall just chasing my buddy around, kidney shotting him. And the fact that I got to drag him around when he was stupid and rushed.... Priceless. Maybe it's just too easy to entertain me. I dont know. But for all of the perks that this game gave me... All the lil things that I got to do... They definitely overrode the other frustrating bits.

8.0-8.5 in my opinion.

I am not an avid gamer... I don't play everyday... and honestly I suck at most shooters and military game. But i completely disagree with your score for this game. 7.5 to 8 would have been better. Yeah the AI needs a little bit of help and they could have made the "boss" battles a little tougher, but i do have to say that Rios and Salem are masters at shooting someone in the back. The only other flaw I could see were the choice of weapons. I loved the variety but for the story mode i played through a couple times and only changed weapons two or three times. As for the melee attacks I would have really liked to have seen a curb stomp attack. The story was awesome it could easily be a good movie if not done by uwe boll. Come on couldnt you see some big names attached to it Dane cook as salem, The rock as Rios, and maybe ryan reynolds as Clyde...

Sure the developers might not have made the AI so good but that is maybe why there is a "complete the game with the computer controlled AI partner" achievement.

Ya, this game deserves at least a 7. Yes some controls are trippy but once you get use to the A.I. the game is entirely Bad@ss

ha come on this game is kick @$$ man a.i's great and im not happy with the wepons but it devesr a 8.5

i absolutley love this game

i rented it when i was at my dad's house (He has the live connection) i couldnt find anybody to play it with online so i beat it by myself and i loved it i think this game deserves a 8 or a 7.5 at least and online it is even better

pimpin guns is just to addictive

I tried this game's demo yesterday and I enjoyed it enough, so I decided to check OXM's review for it and saw it to be 5.5. So next I read the review and I guess that OXM's review was justifiable, so I guess I will just keep the demo (even though it takes up 1.3GB of Space(GRRR!!!)), but you should at least download the demo too, cuz' it's just crazy fun with one of your friends.

I totally agree with OXM's score. I played the game and beat it. It seemed cool at first but once it came down to it, the gameplay was very so-so, the story mode was short as hell! And the online was terrible. Maybe if they spent a little longer on the game it could have been something great!

idk about that - for only fun with friends because i played it solo and coop and I personally feel that they are both very fun and with xbox live i found people to play coop with easily and my friends were more than happy with it when i played coop with them. I think it deserves more than a 5.5

Gamertag- H34DsHoT ftw

P-90 RULES!!!!

This game deseverd more than this me and my friend LOVE this game!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

i believe this review is wrong i would give it a solid 8.5 the co-op play was descent and so was the single player the storyline wasnt that great but clyde (a bad guy for those who havent played)catch me on xbox live soon getting sattelite internet woot

to be honest id say your review is wrong, id give it about 2/10 i rented it completed it on single and on co op play but it is just really boring and the only vaguely entertaing thing on this game is the weapon customisation. the multiplayer was boring and the gameplay sucks.
what happened 2 all the cool stuff in the trailers? if you want to play this game definetly rent it first or consider buying cod 4 whis is the best game ever!.

Gamertag: Ninja penguin89

imo this game is at least a 7.5 because it's a fun co-op game, but I found the single layer to be decent and the 2 vs 2 versus is ok but laggy at times

You guys have good reviews, but I think think one is wrong. I've had the game for a week, played through pro bought and upgraded every weapon and I'm still playing through it. My only problem is the aiming could be better. Overall the whole game was easy even on pro.
Ao2 is a much better game then what this review says. -7.5-

Oops, i forgot to add.
I have been subscribing to you guys for a year now, and think your the best out there. In all my time reading your reviews, this is the ONLY one i thought was wrong.
Although, This game does deserve a low score.
(Not that low though, in my opinion)
Keep up the good work OXM

Any1 up for Gears?

Hmmm.
I personally thought the game was good, but the online play got old considering anybody could come up behind you and hit you in the back, leading your motionless body sitting on the ground un-able to get back up.
I beat the game 3 times, and then it got old.
To me, it's worth 40$, no more. Don't you think 5.5 was a little low? maybe a 6.5?

I did not like this game at all yeah the game was fun for a little while in co-op. The game had terrible online play and it got old after the first couple hour.

DO NOT BUY THIS GAME!!!!!!!

Hello guys! I have to say that although I respect this review, I don't truly agree with it. I find the game to be very fun and enjoyable even on single player. The AI isn't the smartest I've seen...but I can generally get him to do what I want so that I can still execute the tactics that I want. And I think that the bro's are awesome, bro!

Army of two deserves way more than a measly 5.5. I love you guys and have trusted your reviews for years, but yhis is just plain unfair. The AI is OK,multiplayer is a blast and co-op is the most fun ive had playing a vidoegame since gears of war

I tought this games was going to get 7.5 at least from OXM but when I saw the rating, I was asking myself alot of questions. Sure the plot is shallow but it does keep you entertained. The multiplay was very fresh too. Im a big fan of OXM but this review brought up alot of questions. And for other gamers, respect the reviewers taste before sending insults.

Only fun with a human friend. But it still doesnt deserve a 5 at least a 7. The game is not that broken.

I thought that weapon pimping looked pretty cool.

Yes it deserved a higher score than 5.5 maybe a 6.5-7.5 But if you dont agree that the game is short, and easy on professional then your retarded and the partner A.I. was possibly the worst in ANY game. The enemy A.I. was not good but not bad either. I could possibly see how this game could get a 5.5 though because they are ALOT of better games on the 360 than this. Bottom line its a rental. Seriously 0 replayability. Wasting your time playing this online when theyre are games like COD 4 out there is pretty much torturing yourself.

Dan you messed up big time. this is a 9-10 definently. it had everything:graphics great co-op tons of weapons and cool strategys and even 2 on 2 online and you give it a 5.5 this will really change my mind deciding to buy games on what your reveiw says and i had fun playing alone and saw very few problems with the AI

5.5?

This game was way better than that! Innovative gameplay, great graphics and great online...whats not to like?

The game has a lot more innovation gameplay-wise than Halo 3 and it had a lot better graphics so why does it get such a low score?

I loved every minute of this game and judging by some of he comments, others agree.

Big thumbs down on this review

Can't say much, cool co-op gameplay, but just average overall.
It deserves a 7/10, but i must admit I expected more.
Don't get me wrong, you'll love blowing the s*** outta stuff with all your weaponry, and customizing them is fun, but as said before 7/10.

I thought this game deserves a little more than a 5.5, I agree with everything in the report dan, but give it a little more credit.
Look at the gameplay which is not an easy thing to come by in games these days. All the time im getting depressed with boring crap and terrible gameplay in cheap games. Finally a game comes along with decent gameplay and nice graphics.
The multiplayer was shaky and the campaign was short.
I rented this game and i beat it 3 times and got 31 out of 37 acheivements.
Not a good buy, but a killer rental
Graphics: 7
Gameplay: 8
Story: 5
Sound: 6
Cutscenes: 6
Online: 6
All in all i think it deserves a sleek 7.

100 percent dead RIGHT! I posted my opinion of the game before your review on the xbox.com forums and it looked identical. This game was a waste of time. What happened to all the cool things we saw in the trailer? Spot on Dan.

EPIC FAIL

I just played this game Split-Screen with my friend and it was loads of fun and a unique co-op only concept. The story was fun (one of the best as far as military shooters go) and I personnally found nothing wrong with the A.I. considering it was built with the Aggro system. The only bad thing about the game is the melee system but you didn't even mention that. This game deserves an 8.0 but any thing lower than 7.0 and I question your love of games.

I believe this review in no way will reflect what the "average gamer", will think. It is a great game with an interesting, politically relevant (and good) story, and a new unique way to play a shooter. Most gamers beware this score may cause you to miss out on a lot of fun, not to mention a unique online experience as well!

A 5.5! That is to low for a game this good. It should have been at least an eight. come on

Oh wow, I didn't see that the majority of the posters disagree with Dan. Hey Dan, I won't be mad if you take a look at the game and fix... I mean, change your score. ;)

ok ... at least i'm not the only one ... sorry, Dan ... you fail on this one ... were you having a bad day when you wrote this review?

Hmmm, interesting that Dan left out the online multiplayer which I've had fun with. He also left out some of the awesome features that the game contains (voice commands, co-op tactics, highly customizable weapons).

Seems like the game wasn't given a fair shake by the reviewer, or maybe he just didn't have enough time to fully explore the game? Bottom line, this game is definitely worth a look (make sure you check ALL of it out, or you might come up with the same opinion).

I think the voice commands should have given the game a better rating.

Regroup: Brings the PAI to you.
Hold Position: Makes the PAI hold.
Advance: Orders the PAI to move forward.
Suppress: Orders the PAI to take Aggro. Use after the previous commands to order supression on them, i.e. "Advance" then "Suppress" will order the PAI to move forward aggressively.

Credit goes to TheTCD on the Ao2 xbox forum.

I disagree with the 5.5 rating for this title. It is at least a 7. After playing through the missions and a few online matches I found the game to be enjoyable. I disagree about the enemy AI. I thought that they responded better than a lot of shooters. They would move when shots were directed at them and take cover and try to flank you, especially on the harder difficulties. Also I liked the Aggro system. It is great to be able to draw enemy fire or go stealth and take out enemies. The online versus mode feels more like it was bolted on after the fact but this title is what it is a way for you and your friend to blow stuff up and frankly that deserves at least a 7.

Just to add to my previous comment who plays the game without a real person. Truthfully thats the point of the game. Also you didn't mention buying weapons which I though was a cool way to treat a game. I'd like cod to do that. I know you can earn weapons but being able to upgrade it's barrel and other stuff is awesome and I also like the pimped weapons. You guys really slammed this game and really I don't think played it that much. If possible play it again and focus on the game and think if a 5.5 is really a good rating for this game. I mean if it is a 5.5 game it's the most popular liked 5.5 game.

Wow, yea the AI is stupid, but the game rocks when you have a friend to play with. PLus the stuff thats said in game is pretyt funny. But whatever happened to all the stuff that was supposed to be in the game?

I rate it a 7.5. It's not great but it's not flawed beyond enjoyability. I don't understand why OXM slammed it so hard. I like this game and think it plenty fun.

All I can say is wow. Ive been a fan of your reviews since youve started but I really have to disagree with this. I know it's my opinion but I thought the story was great. Online co op is really fun, graphics are some of the best Ive seen and you didn't even mention the weapon buying in the game. I though it was really fun. Multiplayer is kinda dull but yes a crappy AI. This review makes it seem that you have it in for EA. I thought that they finally came out on top until I read your review. Truthfully I fully disagree. AI sucks but who plays with him. Your going search for some random guy on live and plus I haven't had a problem with the AI. I'm sorry but in my eyes Army of Two is 8 material.

I have to admit, getting used to the 3rd person shooting did take me a few minutes to get used, but over the game was what I expected to be. It's exactly what it was meant to do, make you work as a team. I only saw two minor faults. 1) The whole hiding behind a wall was sort of loosey goosey, it was sometimes hard to see if you were actually hiding behind the wall and if you were peeking around the corning I always re-adjusting my character to shoot around a corner. 2) which most people complaints was that of the A.I, a little sloppy, but with a litte tweakng the A.I can be top form to give all of us a good challenge.

Wow. I didn't think this game was COMPLETELY PERFECT, but really, a 5.5? I think this review is really too harsh. Army of Two at least deserves a 7 because of its co-op play.

Too bad. Still, I'm going to play it on co-op, so any bad elements shouldn't be a problem.

sigh... I love this game, why all the haters? I thought it was fun playing by myself... once you get used to the partner control he helps so much. Online co-op is virtually lag free(from my experience and i play with someone on the other side of the country). Versus is unique and fun, though i do wish that you could pick your guns and armor like in campaign, rather the whole "counter-strike" deal. I have 3 other good friends who have it so we make private matches and battle each other. Rock Band is only fun with others (IMO) so why criticize a game centered around co-op specifically? You are the man Dan, but i disagree with you on this one. I would say at least a solid 8 at least.
GT: Lady of Shalott

I think metacritic pretty much nailed it.

Critics: 72/100

Average Joe: 8.4

I though exactly the opposite of everyone else. I loved the campaign and I hate the online multiplayer. I wish it had a regular deathmatch gametype instead of the wierd objective based gametype. Yeah it's different from normal but I think deathmatch and team deathmatch would have been fun in this game as well. As for the A.I. yes it can be quirky at times but I've also seen my A.I. partner do some amazing things plus the achievements come easier than a lot of games. I haven't done all of them yet but they all seem possible.

While I agree with most i still found this game fun. I think a choas theory coop like game would have been better but this game isn't that bad. The AI partner is stupid but still helps out.The coop is insanly fun. I would say its a 7.5.

ok, Dan ... i forgive you ... you (OXM) and I certainly didn't see eye to eye on Rock Band ... which I sold to some guy a week after buying it ... utterly loathsome ... I love Army of 2 though!
