Saints Row 2

WORDS BY: Ryan McCaffrey

The Xbox 360’s first two Augusts were mighty good to third-party publishers. Last year, 2K made a huge splash at the gaming box office with BioShock, while Capcom and THQ each boasted a million-seller in August 2006, with Dead Rising and Saints Row, respectively. Sequels to all three are pretty much inevitable, but the first confirmed release is this August's Saints Row 2.

Set once again in the fictional metropolis of Stilwater, Saints Row 2 takes place several years after the first game’s seemingly permanent conclusion. Though it looked like your character was reduced to fleshy confetti in a boat explosion, think again: it seems you were merely horribly disfigured and left for dead. Yay! It’s a convenient narrative justification for Saints 2’s character-creation system, whereby you’ll rebuild your gangster from scratch as if you required major reconstructive plastic surgery. Which, after being blown up, you did. And hey, you can even choose to come back female. Wow, just how badly burned were you?

The city itself has also changed, with new gang threats to battle, new buildings piercing the skyline, and new ways to get around, such as boats and other watercraft, motorcycles, planes, and helicopters. This urban sandboxer also promises better cop A.I., dual-wielding, and new weapons (such as laser-guided rocket launchers and satchel charges, to name a couple). You’ll also find fresh activities like car surfing (which was already an unofficial mini-game in Grand Theft Auto) and “testicular manslaughter” (we don’t need to explain this, do we?). And best of all, drop-in-anytime co-op play for the entire campaign. In addition, Volition is promising a new adversarial multiplayer mode that goes beyond mere deathmatch.

If nothing else, the release of Saints Row 2 should prove once and for all whether the success of Volition’s open-ended crime-fest was due more to timing (it shipped during the dry spell between GTA releases) than it being the 360’s first next-gen sandboxer. We’ve put our money on the quality of the original game, but with Saints 2 shipping just a few months after GTA IV, its appeal will truly be put to the test.

COMMENTS:

people need to understand that, one, this game still has months to develope and become just as great if not greater then the first saints row , and two, this game is a extremelly fun game and saints row was way way way beter then GTA San Andreas but you cannot compare it to GTA IV becuase IV is the best game of all time..... better then halo or call of duty or any game ever, hands down.
so even if saints row isnt as good as GTA IV, it is still very entertaining and fun, and worth buying once you are done with playing gta 4, for a thousand hours straight. plus in saints row you can fully coustimize everything about you character, your car, and in saints row two you can coustimize the fournature in your house (stripper poles, fireplaces, hardwood floor, ext.) and you cant do any of that in GTA IV.

well maybe the graphics arent amazing cuz their not in their final stage of developement. uh DUUH.

i think it will not live up to the sccusec of gta4

Saints Row, the first one was an obvious attempt to capture the Grand Theft Auto essence which of course it did not. There is no clear creativity nor passion behind the developers of Saints Row. Saints Row although it did manage to entertain us, it did , but not in comparison to any GTA game. The detail, the story, the immersion any GTA game (especially GTA IV) brings cannot be compared to any non creative, not even generic quality of games like Saints Row. GTA games are very high quality; they indeed deliver the rich high any smart gamer would want and only idiots would prefer or choose the cheap high from games like Saints Row. As far as Saints Row 2, it looks dull, lack of detail, botched graphics and like the first game, most likely a crappy story to go with it. GTA developers do their job correctly and in turn deliver great games. Saints Row developers have a lot of learning to do; please do not disturb this is a study area. He He He.

how could you even think this is better than GTA4 the graphics suck

By no stretch of the imagination do these screenshots look better than GTA IV.

When this games comes out people will know what gta is supposed to be like!

this is going to murder gta!!

I love it!!!

Oh hells yeah I always knew they could do it the graphics even look better than gta

I have read the review of this in the magazine its most likely going to be better but one thing I need to ask when is it out in Britain?????

I love GTAIV but I think these might beat it out with all the extra features it has that GTA doesn't. One in particular is the Co-op through the story mode.

This game looks awesome. :)

GTA IV ROCKS!!!11!!!1
