Omega 5
WORDS BY: Ryan McCaffrey

If you’re not hardcore enough to know Lords of Thunder or Forgotten Worlds, stop reading now. We’re sorry, but Natsume’s upcoming 3D side-scrolling shooter (yes, 3D) isn’t for you.
Designed for the dedicated shooter connoisseur — before the term referred to first-person games like Halo — this Xbox Live Arcade original, in classic genre style, never stops moving to the right. The catch is that it’s in (gorgeous) 3D. Sure, the action moves on a steady 2D plane, but the characters and environments are all rendered in the third dimension. This means that enemies can make their way into your face from anywhere.

Fundamentally, the game doesn’t play too differently from the 2D scrollers of yore, but when you see a giant, beautifully rendered mech inching toward you from the distance, you know it means business.
We tried a quick couple of levels with the two-player co-op mode, which upped the fun-factor exponentially. Sadly, Omega 5 will be same-screen–only, but hey, the oldies didn’t have online either…
