Champions Online
WORDS BY: Ryan McCaffrey
It’s only fitting that the game to finally break the Xbox platform’s massively-multiplayer-online-roleplaying-game curse will — er, should, lest we jinx it — be Champions Online. Its developer, veteran MMO house Cryptic Studios (best known for PC release City of Heroes), was previously commissioned to work on the 360-exclusive Marvel Universe Online before the partnering companies (Microsoft, Marvel, and Cryptic) agreed to cancel it.

Fortunately, many of its good ideas have been massaged into Champions Online, a gamepad-driven MMO based on a 1980s superhero-themed pen-and-paper RPG that Cryptic liked so much, it went out and bought the entire IP outright. With a backstory rich in archvillains, globe-altering battles, and even extraterrestrial activity, Champions is, at its heart, a real-time action-RPG played with small groups of friends in a humongous persistent world occupied by thousands of other gamers.
We played through a couple of instances with pre-fabbed characters — you’ll be able to customize both the look and powers of your avatar — with the Xbox 360 controller plugged into a build of the PC version, and the controls couldn’t be simpler. The X button delivers your light attacks, which build up your character’s energy. Unleash that accumulated energy by holding down the Y button and doing heavy damage. It’s an interesting give-and-take system that successfully balances itself. Meanwhile, the A button jumps, RT blocks, and LT serves as a shift key to access additional abilities.

With an appropriately “comic-shaded” visual look and an exaggerated, colorful art style to match its grandiose animations, Champions is looking every bit like the superhero game it already plays as. And since history has indicated that it will take a superheroic effort to actually release an MMO for the Xbox 360, Champions Online might be the perfect game to answer the call. It’s even expected to be cross-platform–compatible with Windows players to boot!

Seemed like a good game except for the monthly fee problem on top of XBOX fees.

I have to say it sounds real fun. I have a PC and an Xbox 360.that is out with the red ring of death by the way.Oh yeah, I have a PC and the reason I don't by the mmo's is because of the monthly fees. I pay for My gold membership which is supposed to be so I can play with my friends on line.Battlefield on my PC doesn't have a monthly sub. There's too many real good games I can play that the gold fee covers I won't bother with another monthly bill to pay one game.Want more money from me? Make a game I love to play then make worth wild DLC. Simple.COD world at war has sucked an extra 30$ in DLC on top of the original 60$ because I know it's goning to be worth it. Left for dead gave us dare I say it A free DLC with new maps and survival mode.I don't know,to much good going on for another monthly bill.

I thought with the success with Guild Wars and a one time fee that people wouldn't hold that traditional element of an MMO so tightly. If it's an exclusive MMO and Microsoft wants it to start the MMO console genre then I would think they'd use the gold membership we pay for for the online content and new classes/skills etc... Having to pay monthly is just speculation right now. This game looks interesting none the less.

I totally get why MMOs have a monthly fee on PC. Even if they did nothing else, they have to have servers up and running to ensure that I can play the game as it was meant to be played.
But I'm already paying for server infrastructure with my gold membership.
And when I want to pay a little extra for more content I have DLC.
As interested as I am in Champions Online, I won't buy it if they want a monthly subscription for those reasons. I'm sure lots of other Gold subscribers agree, which is why MMOs will have a tough time on 360.

And the great cities wane and last descend
Into the dust, for all things have an end."

Cart00nstrip,
I wanted to thank you for making such a rational, thought out response. I was expecting something...much different.
I wanted to make it clear that I am not asking or telling you to do anything. I am especially not trying to tell you what to do with your money. I was stating that there is a reason for the standard monthly fee to most MMO's. If you don't want to pay a monthly fee for an MMO...DON'T. It is really that simple.
I want to address the argument that a fee for an MMO is ON TOP of the fee for Live. The fee, if any, would be for a seperate service from Live. Stating that paying for Live should give you free access to an MMO on the 360 is basically like stating that paying your home internet bill should give you free access to pay sites on the internet.
Also, keep in mind that the people supporting the MMO are at Cryptic, not MSFT. Your Live membership fees are for MSFT support. Why would Cryptic offer support to a persistent MMO for free...would you?
As for buying a $60 coaster - don't do it. Don't buy a game right away if you have big doubts about it. Research the game, get opinions from friends that like the same type of games as you, find out everything you can before shelling out your hard earned money. I would assume that there will be a demo. If there is, give it a shot. But don't waste your money.
As for marketing this type of game on the xbox, I have no idea. I would target males in their mid 20's, use dorky humor, and shots of things blowing up. But I am sure that Cryptic has a marketing dept ready to handle that sort of thing.
But you are correct, there are a lot of "if's" for Cryptic and MSFT to get past to make this work. If there weren't, we would already see MMO's on the 360.
There are many issues with FFXI. I played for awhile on the PS2. I enjoyed it at first, but got tired of it. I can see why it isn't more popular.
By the way, the interface utilizing the triggers to bring up ability menus or macros does work. So it's not impossible to make an MMO console accessable.
Take care.
(please ignore spelling mistakes) :)

What you need to be aware of dgabbott is that we simply do not CARE where the money goes, it's whether we have to pay for it ON TOP of our Xbox Live fees to begin with. We're paying upwards of $60 a year already just for the privilege of playing online - now you want to charge us some more, and act like it's justified?
-
Don't get me wrong, I actually don't mind the charge for Live Gold - the money is well spent considering how fast they fix issues, and how smoothly, over-all, the service runs. But paying more on top of that?
-
As for being able to "decide pretty quickly if the fee is worth it" well, doesn't that usually involve BUYING the game first? If I've already bought the game, then decide it isn't worth the subscription fee, I've just purchased a $60 coaster. Awesome.
-
I understand that MMOs are hot on PC right now, and with good reason. I just can't see how they would work on the 360. I don't even see how they could possibly MARKET it. "Hey gamers! I know a few of you are still a little sore that we already charge you a monthly fee, but how 'bout a little more for this really fun game that never ends! Doesn't that sound cool?" What about the Silver subscribers? How's THAT gonna work?
-
Over the years, the Xbox has "lost" several aborted attempts at an Xbox MMO, and every single time I've been unsurprised. I simply don't see how this endeavor can succeed on the platform. FFXI notwithstanding - but that's a pretty niche game. I only have one friend in my flist who owns it, and he hasn't played it in MONTHS (altho' I'm pretty sure that will change when the new expansion comes out). I think any MMO for Xbox is facing an uphill battle as soon as it leaves the starting gate - and they'll already be spending tens of millions just to get to the GATE - which seems like an awfully big risk for what may potentially be a very small market. There are a lot of "ifs" to think about here...
-
I've been wrong before, however, this is just my two cents...

I imagine that there will be a monthly fee. For people that complain about these fees, please be aware that they aren't there "just" to take your money. The main function of the monthly fees is to pay for new content/expansions/upgrades/and good ole standard tech help.
If you have played an MMO in the past, you'll know that you can decide pretty quickly if the fee is worth it (to you.) Please also be aware that most/many MMO's give a free month subscription when you buy the game.
Also, since it is on the 360, and MS would really love an MMO to take off there, I would be shocked if there wasn't a demo.

The only way I can see this working is if we can pay our subscription with Microsoft points or its free.

My only question is will there be an additional monthly fee i will have to pay on top of my XBOX LIVE money?
