This Week in Xbox — 6/13

WORDS BY: Ryan Loren

And It Was All Yellow…

Shacknews.com reports that the next set of downloadable Guitar Hero III content will feature a trio of Coldplay songs, including the new single off their about-to-be-released album. The package will be available for download on June 19.

The three songs are:

• “Violet Hill”

• “Yellow”

• “God Put a Smile on Your Face”

VERDICT: I can’t really remember the last time I rocked out to Coldplay. I promise to reserve judgment until we have a chance to play the songs, though.

New Xbox Originals

Gamespot.com reports that two new Xbox Originals titles will be available for download on the Xbox Live Marketplace on June 16. The new titles are Guilty Gear XX #Reload, which released in 2004, and Legend of Spyro: A New Beginning, which came out in late 2006.

VERDICT: These two games wouldn't be our first choice for the next Xbox Originals titles. Where are the classics like Return to Wolfenstein: Tides of War? Knights of the Old Republic? Oddworld: Munch's Oddysee? Okay…kidding about that last one.

EA Goes to Court

Gamespot.com reports that a pair of gamers from Washington, D.C., and California are suing EA for "blatantly anticompetitive conduct" after the company’s signing of exclusivity rights with the NFL, AFL, and NCAA. The defendants are fighting EA’s apparent monopoly on officially licensed football games.

VERDICT: EA Sports has always been popular, but many gamers took a dim view of these exclusivity agreements for very understandable reasons. Still, you have to admit: the company usually makes some great games.

The Numbers Are In…

… and it’s not good news for Microsoft. 1Up.com reports that the sales numbers for May indicate that the PS3 outsold the Xbox 360 by 22,000 units. Analysts expect this trend to continue in June with the release of Metal Gear Solid 4. The Nintendo Wii and Nintedo DS continue to lead all systems in sales by obscene numbers.

On the positive side, the 360 version of Grand Theft Auto IV outsold all other games in May. The 360 version sold over 425,000 more copies than the the PS3 version.

VERDICT: The battle for second place among next-gen consoles (I'm excluding the DS here) just seems oddly funny to me. “We’re number 2!” Either way, expect the battle to be close from here on out.

COMMENTS:

I think the real race is between sony and microsoft wii is just selling cause of price everyone remember wha happened to the game cube it went down

no wait my gamertag is ethanox, slight spelling error, sorry.

two more thing i want to say they should add halo 2 and oddworld: stranger's wrath. at least make stranger's wrath compatible. that game has been sitting in my collection for 2 years. i want to freakin play it!!!! also the other thing i have to say is ill_sue_ya is not my real gamertag, it's etanox.

dragonforce, dragonforce, dragonforce. thats some serious awsome dlc there.

The 360 is still ahead by a large amount of consoles. The Wii doesn't deserve top spot. It's a gimmick to attract the casual, family gamers. I'm not a family gamer. Also, there are only a few, occasional hard-core games, but there aren't a lot.

Nintendo is only selling because of its price and its one good game Super Smash Bros. Brawl. Its a gimmick that will die down soon enough the console race is really only for Sony And Microsoft. People might say but what about Mario Galaxy and Zelda: Twilight Princess but did those games sell as well as Smash Bros. in its first few weeks out nah.

It is funny how it used to be who would dethrone Sony, but now it is who will dethrone Nintendo.

Gamertag: Da Jimi

PaperLantern, Let me remind you that your comment is your opinon, not necessarily true. Last i checked, Madden is kind of a big deal. And i know that Madden is our only choice for a licensed football game, but i still think you get my point

Didn't This Week In Xbox used to be more than one page long?

It sucks how the originals that come out one month aren't bad like Stubbs and then the 2 for this month just suck. Microsoft needs to really think about what they put out a little more.

Y'know, it's weird: I've never consciously AVOIDED EA games as a publisher, but it's actually VERY RARE that I ever pick up one of their games. I don't care for sports very much, so all that just passes me by, but the ONLY EA games I own are "The Simpsons Game" (fun, in an annoying sort of way), the last 2 Burnouts, and the Orange Box. I have "Mass Effect", too, but that was before EA bought BioWare. Other than the upcoming dlc for "Burnout Paradise", the only upcoming EA title I'm even remotely excited about is "Dead Space"...

"Still, you have to admit: the company usually makes some great games."

No I don't. EA Sports makes some of the shittiest sports games I've ever played. Their baseball series was awesome, but Madden and NBA Live are both terrible compared to NBA 2k and NFL 2k5.
