This Week in Xbox — 5/30

WORDS BY: Ryan Loren
Saints Row 2 Delayed

Our sister website next-gen.biz announced that THQ is delaying its release of Saints Row 2, the sequel to the 2006 GTA-esque game. THQ pushed back the release date by almost two months, releasing on October 14 rather than August 26.

According to web rumors, the co-op game, an important feature of Saints Row 2, is still not finished. The single player game will be playable online in co-op mode.

VERDICT: We loved Saint’s Row (8.0 rating) but with Grand Theft Auto IV still consuming our days, we won’t exactly be waiting on the edge of our seats.

PS3 on the Rise, Xbox 360 Falling Behind

GameDaily.com reports that a study released by DFC Intelligence claims that Sony’s PlayStation 3 will overtake Microsoft’s Xbox 360 in installed base by 2009. Nintendo’s Wii console will continue to lead the way, but with many blockbuster titles only being released for the 360 or PS3, it’s the battle for second place that holds the most interest among the industry.

VERDICT: Were these the same people who predicted Sony would dominate out of the gate? Somehow I just don’t think the Xbox 360 is prepared to roll over and die.

G4 Teams Up With Xbox Live

G4 announced a partnership with Xbox Live to release shows for download from a few of their most popular series. Fans will be able to download full episodes of “Code Monkeys,” “The Block,” and the ever-popular “Attack of the Show.”

VERDICT: You can never have too much G4 or too much Olivia Munn.

Prince of Persia Interview

Teamxbox.com scored a good interview with Ben Mattes, producer for the upcoming Prince of Persia game for the Xbox 360. The interview includes many interesting tidbits about a new prince with a new storyline in an effort to wipe the slate clean and start over with the next-gen consoles. While the core game play will still stay the same, expect to see a new approach to the puzzle-solving acrobatic style we’ve come to love.

And, sorry, no co-op.

VERDICT: If it’s not broken, don’t fix it. Most notably, the change in the combat system could be the biggest worry. Still, after playing such a quality franchise for the past 19 years, it’s hard to be too concerned.

Rock Band: Music Store of the Future

A month after 1Up.com reported that Mötley Crüe would experiment selling its new single on Rock Band before it released to iTunes and other music stores, the results are in.

Amazon and iTunes combined to sell 10,000 copies of the single, but Rock Band blew them away, selling a whopping 47,000 through downloadable content. Seeing as the Rock Band version cost twice as much, it’s probably a path we’ll see other music artists follow.

VERDICT: I can’t listen to it on my iPod, but I can now bang out a drum solo bested only by Tommy Lee himself. There’s something appealing about playing a song on Rock Band that is newly released on iTunes.

COMMENTS:

Is that "People, do not support G4" as in your telling us not to support them because we don't know and you do or "people do not support G4" because you think nobody likes G4 we just don't know it.

G4 is okay. ATOS, XPlay and CodeMonkeys are all okay shows, Cheaters is pretty funny now and then when I feel like watching a little redneck love triangle but if I have to watch another cops rerun or some crap japanese import my head might explode.

I doubt PS3 will ever pass 360, but if it does take second place, I don't think it will stay there too long.

Two comments...1) I truly believe the only reason that the PS3 is even coming close to the 360 is Blue Ray. People are getting it as a 2-for-1 deal, gaming and movies. Had HD won the war, would PS3 sell? I really don't think so. 2) I was one who bought the Crue track for Rock Band and loved listening as well as playing it. I am looking forward to Metallica and anything else, especially when it's exclusive and new. Although, I've got to admit, after 20+ hours of playing GTA4 and listening to the classic rock station...I would kill to play "Heaven and Hell" on Rock Band or GH!

well i think the guys at dfc are over paid.. and need some real work... xbox 360, has a fan for life.. not only are the game hell of fun to play .. they also offer very good oline play. some games do lack the luster from there trailer demos. anyways thats just my personal thinking on this topic... well see you guys next time .... xcyclops31x

Oh yeah-Olivia is a BWA

G4tv truly does suck-it used to be INFORMATIVE when it was TECHTV. The only show worth watching is XPLAY only because of the reviews. The rest of the shows are barely worthy of pulling my pants down and mooning them. I have both consoles and I do have issues with the 360 locking at times-but the clear choice is the 360.

Sony over-throwing the Xbox 360? The 360 has too many hits (The PS3 has too little) for that to happen.

First of G4 sucks,2nd attack of the show is plain stupid and mediocre,Third PS3 would be on life support if it was'nt for mgs4,and last where is KILLER INSTINCT 3D!people do not support G4 TRUST ME!

haha ya right.. ps3 needs a decent library of games before it can take over the 360... and i don't see that happening anytime soon. It's sad when people primarily use a gaming console to play DVD's...

Sorry but GTA IV sucked. hoping SR2 will be more my style.

DANGIT. i go to this site everyday, and u guysalways do good on my xbox news. but i cant tell you how bad it sucks when theres only one page on the weekly update. still great (lol Ps3 passing xbox? no way) but it SUCKS when the other half of the pie isnt there. keep it up though ryan

I'm anxiously awaiting Metallica's new single...

That Rock Band news kinda serves notice. We're going to see it a lot from every band with a smart manager.
