Rock Band Download Low-Down: Week 42

WORDS BY: Ryan McCaffrey

Each week we’ll run out onto our website stage like roadies and review the latest Rock Band Downloadable Content. Check back every week! (And click here for all of our previous music DLC reviews.)

*NOTE: Each of the songs this week is available for 80 Microsoft Points ($1) each, or bundled together as the PAX Pack for 240 Microsoft Points ($3). Proceeds from this DLC will go to Penny Arcade's Child's Play charity.

MC Frontalot rocks PAX 2007.

WHAT ROCKS: Reaching out to the geeks of the world, this week's pack is a singer's dream. A nerdy singer's dream, anyway. Jonathan Coulton (the same guy who wrote Portal's "Still Alive" -- which is of course also available in Rock Band) delivers a hilarious love letter from an evil dictator (no really, listen to the lyrics!) in the form of "Skullcrusher Mountain." MC Frontalot's "Livin' at the Corner of Dude and Catastrophe" will one day be the answer to a trivia question: what was the first rap song in Rock Band? Meanwhile, "Shhh..." by The Darkest of the Hillside Thickets sports a deceptively fun bass line and drum chart.

WHAT SUCKS: Guitar on "Dude and Catastrophe" is ludicrously repetitive and boring.

FINAL VERDICT: We'd probably normally give this a "Not Bad," but they're just a buck each and it's all for charity. So reach into your wallet, pull out $3, buy these, and enjoy them!

COMMENTS:

Isn't it enough to know that I ruined a pony making a gift for you?

Charity, great. Keep it up. I'm trying to think of a new gamertag, so by cutting out 800 from my budget, I don't think I can nab this one. Hopefully the next couple weeks bring a big hitter besides Rush, or else I'll just save the extra for RB2.

did i use too much monkey?

I'm sooo in to you, but I'm waaay too smart for you...

"what was the first rap song in Rock Band?"

The *real* answer to this would be the Beastie Boy's "Sabotage".

"Skullcrusher Mountain" is one of my favorite DLC songs so far. It's the only song that I've nearly failed because I was too busy laughing at the lyrics. I ruined a pony for you!
Great pack. Not really looking forward to next weeks - but really looking forward to the 14th!

i was kinda dissapointed w/ the last 2 weeks. (A.K.A any thing released after the roadrunner tack pack)
