Rock Band Download Low-Down: Week 31
WORDS BY: OXM Staff
Each week we’ll run out onto our website stage like roadies and review the latest Rock Band Downloadable Content. Check back every week! (And click here for all of our previous music DLC reviews.)
*NOTE: Each of the songs this week is only available as a single download. Each costs 160 Microsoft Points ($2) except for "Rock 'n' Roll Dream," which costs 80 Microsoft Points ($1).

"Afterlife" by Avenged Sevenfold
WHAT ROCKS: A genuinely fun vocal chorus and a challenging drum chart are the highlight of this popular band's hit single.
WHAT SUCKS: Guitars are just okay.
FINAL VERDICT: If you're not yet a fan of the band but want to check them out, this is the better of the two to go with.

--
"Critical Acclaim" by Avenged Sevenfold
WHAT ROCKS: Another drum part that will test your mettle, along with a tough guitar solo.
WHAT SUCKS: Ugh, could we mute the vocals please? They kill the song and are no fun to "sing." And when you listen to the real thing, a lot is bleeped in this, too.
FINAL VERDICT: Grab "Afterlife" instead.

--
"Hammerhead" by The Offspring
WHAT ROCKS: The first single off of the just-released album Rise and Fall, Rage and Grace is an excellent tune to both listen to and jam away with in Rock Band. Guitar and vocals are the best parts.
WHAT SUCKS: The drums are actually even more difficult than their rating gives them credit for. These should be in the "Nightmare" difficulty category. The main riff is especially tough to pick up. If you're not VERY comfortable with whatever skill level you play on, you're likely to get owned.
FINAL VERDICT: A new single that doesn't make us wish for the "good old days" of a band? Sign us up!

--
"Rock 'n' Roll Dream" by Crooked X
WHAT ROCKS: Our favorite of the indie bands from the disc release of Rock Band ("Nightmare") returns with a catchy bar-band kind of song that won't challenge you much, but is a hoot to play with a full band. Come to think of it, any song that has lyrics about being a rock star seems to be especially fun and appropo in this game.
WHAT SUCKS: Don't expect to sweat. Whether or not that's a bad thing is up to you.
FINAL VERDICT: It's easy, but it's fun. And it's just a buck. Grab it.

Well if MTV will ban Davidian and Crashing Around You by Machine Head and Lacquer Head (which is consequently about the opposite of what they banned it for - drug use) then I can see them ruining a song in a game using censorship. Overall though I thought those songs by Avenged Sevenfold deserved a little better than you guys gave them. I played the drums on expert (failed once but thats due to a bad red and green pad) and guitar was actually fun for me to play, unlike most in Rock Band. As for singing, I did sing Critical Acclaim, but I was also playing guitar so I don't know about that one there.

Yeah I'm really sick of Rock Band songs getting censored...I don't understand why they don't put out the song how the artist intended it to be. And hey if there is some language in the song isn't that why ROCK BAND is rated T for teens. i mean MTV for god sake they have shows like Tila Tequila where you can watch lesbians make out but we can't get the lyrics "mother fucker" in the opening of Critically Acclaimed. the music industry has a label on CDS called "Parental Advisory". Why doesn't rock band implement this PA label that the music industry has been using for explicit lyrics for years and just post it next to the song so that if a tiny tikes' parents are shopping for new tracks they are aware of the songs content. That would be awesome for all the people that are over 16 and enjoy this game in its lyric entirity. thats all folks...

Personally, I liked both "Critical Acclaim" and "Afterlife" by Avenged Sevenfold. I personally don't like how "Critical Acclaim" had to be censored. (Side note: I've never really liked the whole political message in the song. I'm not into political messages in songs. I want to listen to music, not an advertisement.)
As far these songs being fun to play? They're great. They're a lot of fun, and "Afterlife" has a good solo. The only thing I'm disappointed about is that they should have taken something like "Second Heartbeat" from Avenged Sevenfold's Waking the Fallen CD. That CD is where all of their best music is from, hands down.
"Hammerhead" by The Offspring is an incredibly fun song as well, I'll agree with you on that one.
As far as Crooked X goes, the song "Nightmare" was all well and good, simple and easy enough to play. You weren't riveted by it, but you sure as hell didn't fall asleep like you do playing the new song "Rock 'n' Roll Dream".

@ Samuel: For someone who doesn't care about reviews for more than fun, ya sure are taking this whole A7X thing pretty darn serious

Where is the Muse pack? There were six great songs by a great band coming out soon, but Harmonix hasn't said anything since a few months ago. Give us the Absolution album or even Origin of Symmetry for christ's sake! Hysteria can only last so long. I mean, seriously, you've released The Cars and Pixies? Give us a good, challenging CD. Give us Muse.

Just because a song is really hard, does not necessarily make it a great song to play. Some of the funnest songs to play are not THAT difficult, of course I play on expert.
Other "unknown" songs I want to see on Rock Band: 96 Quite Bitter Beings (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=WgQ7qOCDFYQ&feature=related) by CKY.
And:
Age of Pamparius (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=E40L_l9Rfrw) by Nashville Pussy. Oh wait, that song is well known now, but nevertheless, would like to see it, and play it. The studio recording is a lot better also...

OXM, do people a favor- take your bias out of your reviews.
Crooked X was not a good pick. It was not fun, and it was not challenging on any instrument, and it's unknown. I don't mind unknown stuff- as long as it fits with the first two stipulations mentioned.
If Crooked X gets a "Hell Yes" then EVERY DLC EVER RELEASED SHOULD TOO.
The Avenged Sevenfold songs are amazing on all instruments.
They are well constructed songs.
You say the guitar is just "okay" on Afterlife? Post a picture of you 99%-100%ing it, especially that solo. Go ahead. Hell, even without the solo do it.
Bias is why I look at reviews for fun, but don't give a flying fuck what they say.

WHERE IS THE LED!!!!!
or maybe that little band called the Beatles! I mean come on we have Jimmy Buffet, nothing wrong with the guy, and the B-52 in a video game called ROCK BAND and the masters of the ROCK aren't accounted for, what gives.
Oh and i would also like to see some SVR and Jimmy Hendrix please. and maybe Hot Hot Heat or THe Vines "GET FREE" I mean come on we have the Hives already!!! O yeah lets gets some music in my Pnuma Trio, yeah theres no vocals but it would be killer music to jam to...and yeah we need more jam music like the dead and that one song red tandy.
You all know that if led had any songs that the first song would be on there is "the song remains the same"!!!
And Harmonix PLEAZE no more songs about rock and Roll. wasn't Boston's "Rock n Roll Band" enough!!! anyway thats all....for now

Yeah, I really disagreed with this weeks review as well. "Hammerhead" was fun, but "Rock N Roll Dream" was really "bleh" for me.
And while the Avenged Sevenfold songs aren't really as good as some of their earlier stuff I've heard, I thought they were a blast to play and would welcome more songs from them. I guess they're a love em or hate em band?

I come to OXM every week to check out the latest Rock Band reviews and today will be the last. I just don't get it. Everyone is entitled to their own opinion but "WOW" this week was REALLY of the mark. I'm not an Avenged Sevenfold fan, don't get me wrong they're killer, but how does Rock n Roll Dream by Crooked X get a hell yes while Critically Acclaimed gets a boo. We need more challeging songs in Rock Band and advicating bad songs like Rock n Roll Dream only fuels the fire for more bad song. So OXM please review with some more integrity and just because a song is a buck don't make it worth the purchase. And Afterlife's guitar track is killer!!! Did they review that song on EASY? Anyway Hammerhead is great and the drums are suprisingly difficult. I'm looking forward to the offspring pack that is coming out soon!!!

OXM should have had Mitch review this! Seriously! Critical Acclaim is my favorite song by them, and plus, It doesn't censor out the political message(I totally agree with it). The Offspring song is extremely hard on drums. I play on Hard and couldn't 100% on Medium. And Afterlife, I agree, is probably the most challenging song in the last three weeks on guitar.

For me:
Afterlife- Very fun drums, and a catchy chorus. Guitar has a very fun, insane solo, but an annoyingly difficult main riff. Bass is pretty much the same.
Critical Acclaim- I differ a bit here. The drums are actually, in my opinion, more fun than Afterlife. The guitar has a fun solo, even if it is easily to 100%. The vocals are hit and miss... I do not agree with the political message, but am glad it is in the game to balance out the left wing Fortunate Son, War Pigs, and so on.
Hammerhead- Very catchy, and fun to sing. The guitar and bass are both extremely fun. The drums are very difficult, and deserve to be higher.
Rock and Roll Star- Here is another place where I differ... I did not like this song, or even the band. They are all good at their instruments, and the vocalist is decent, but my main problem is the lyrics of both Nightmare and this one. Nightmare was a blatant Enter Sandman rip-off, while this song is incredibly cheesy, and overly cliche.

seriousely terr0r inc is right, megadeth would be some awsome DLC. it's sad that avenged sevenfolds tracks were not bat country. :( also visit youtube and type "arby 'n' the chief", best halo machinima ever. (still waiting for bat country, more metallica, led zepplin, buckethead, and more the hives [tick tick boom!])

I'd say that the Avenged songs are some great DLC and I think they'd be pretty hard (espicially the Afterlife solo)! Of course I'm a huge fan of the band so that might cloud my judgement a bit :) But I'd have to say I agree with Mitch on the a7x songs. Rock On

The reviewer has it backwards. Critical Acclaim is easily the most fun song of the week and the Crooked X song is by far the worst. Nightmare was a much better song than Rock n Roll Dream.

*NOTE: Each of the songs this week is only available as a single download. Each costs 160 Microsoft Points ($1) except for "Rock 'n' Roll Dream," which costs 80 Microsoft Points ($1).

Rock 'n' Roll Dream is 80 MS points not 160. So it's only a dollar.

How can you say that the After life guitar is "just okay?" it has possibly one of the most challenging solos that I've ever played in the game. Critical Acclaim is also a solid song idk why you would give it a "Boo!!!" plus the solo isn't challenging at all i think that you confused the Afterlife and Critical Acclaim solos because Critical Acclaim's solo is somewhat simple whereas the Afterlife Solo is hell on earth. I think that both Avenged Sevenfold songs deserve a "Hell Yes!" but that's just my opinion

How about some Deftones, Alice In Chains, or Pantera dowloadable content. Harmonix never uses songs from bands that i listen to. I havent felt the need to download anything since "interstate love song". nWo 4 Life!

Didn't Harmonix say we'd be getting some R rated language in DLC? What's up with the censorship?
I'm a fan of Shadow's vocals in Avenged Sevenfold... Though I can get why people wouldn't.

A7X is alright, but the Offspring sucks, they haven't put out a good album since like 1993. How's the Crooked X song? I am still waiting for more Pantera, Megadeth and some AC/DC.
I think for the next album release, they should release Megadeth - Youthanasia (1994). That would be even better than Judas Priest.
