Rock Band Download Low-Down: Week 29

WORDS BY: OXM Staff

Each week we’ll run out onto our website stage like roadies and review the latest Rock Band Downloadable Content. Check back every week! (And click here for all of our previous music DLC reviews.)

*NOTE: Each of the songs in the Jimmy Buffett Pack costs 160 Microsoft Points ($2), or buy all three as a pack for 440 Microsoft Points ($5.50). Each of the songs in the Disturbed Pack costs 80 Microsoft Points ($1) for a limited time, or buy all three as a pack for 240 Microsoft Points ($3) for a limited time.

Jimmy Buffett Pack

WHAT ROCKS: Is there anyone who doesn't at least know the choruses to all three of these songs? They are a guilty and/or drunken pleasure on vocals (you almost have to love the silliness of the lyrics in both "Cheeseburger in Paradise" and "Margaritaville"), and you can't help but smile and tip your hat to Jimmy for not only re-recording them specifically for Rock Band, but also for including a reference to the game near the end of "Volcano."
WHAT SUCKS: Unfortunately, however, Jimmy sounds...old. Undead Unicorn lead guitarist Dan Amrich commented that Jimmy sounded like he had no energy in these re-recordings -- like he's playing the same songs for the billionth time for a crowd of senior citizens.
FINAL VERDICT: A great way to get your parents to play Rock Band with you...if that's what you want.

Disturbed Pack

WHAT ROCKS: Holy cow the drums are fun! Dig the drum solo that opens "Perfect Insanity," and the charts for both of the other two tracks, "Indestructible" and "Inside the Fire," are varied and very...kinetic to play. Bass on all three songs is also a challenging highlight.
WHAT SUCKS: The one-dollar price point will go away eventually. Nevertheless, these would be worth paying full price for.
FINAL VERDICT: At a current price of a dollar per song to help promote the new album these tracks are taken from, this pack is an absolute no-brainer, particularly for drum fans.

COMMENTS:

Yes, he is now, but he's been making music since White Zombie came out in 1986. I also think we need more Lamb of God, Slayer, Sepultura, Megadeth, Motley Crue and why not some Wednesday 13 ?

actually i think white zombie is in GH III. (it's either white zombie or rob zombie. isn't rob zombie a movie director? huh?)

Something we saw on GH1 but haven't since are bands like Pantera, White Zombie and Black Label Society. If they were on board in the beginning why arent their songs being used now? They rock!

Well...besides my leg seizing up through the ridiculously long double bass sections in all the Disturbed songs, they're fun to play :D

For the person who asked about more Metallica, there's gonna be a Guitar Hero: Metallica (kinda like the Aerosmith). No drums or vocals, but it's the next best thing.

Btw, Disturbed's "Indestructible" is amazing. Buy the CD (or go on iTunes like I did)!

if you want to try some buckethead go for the albums, monsters and robots, decoding the tomb of bansheebot, pepper's ghost, and enter the chicken. (nottingham lace BELONGS in GH 3 or On Tour (IV).

Yea. I'll agree with you on that. It must be hard for Harmonix and Neversoft to decide which songs to include in downloadable packs. They have to try and guess how many users will buy each pack and which bands will make them the most money for all of the work they do on each song. It can also be hard to attain the rights for certain songs. But buckethead was great in GHII. Mabey I should check out some more of his work?!

sorry man, i'm not a big edgar winter fan. i didn't hear of him until until Guitar Hero I.
and... Youve heard of buckethead? next to nobody has heard of him. (i fell ashamed not discovering him until GH II) also there are cheaper (and legal) places to buy music, mp3 fiesta (dont ask why a company on russian soil calls their site mp3 fiesta, by the way only legal cause it's on russian soil) is 2$ an album. anyway buckethead would be awsome for GH III. until he's made downloadable for GH III we'll have to stick to modding our PS2's.

No. Edgar winter sing songs like free ride, a classic. go onto itunes tonight. good stuff.

Disturbed, SWEET! Anybody got an idea when they'll add more Metallica?

When I first went to rockband.com last week to check what the new tracks would be i just saw jimmy and disturbed. The thing that popped into my mind was jimmy eat world but know it's jimmy buffet. Which I think we can all agree JEW would be better than JB. Anyway, that's just would I think.

no dude, buckethead would be perfect. monsters and robot especially. it's the kind of DLC that no one heard of yet suprisingly fantastic. and edgar winter? isn't he instramental?

If you think about it, not nearly as many people would want buckethead compared to other great songs like some good old Edgar Winter or some Alt rock like submersed.

we need more meatallica! master of puppets, fight fire with fire, (i love that good ol' fashoned thrash metal insanity strumming.)and battery would make a great pack. master of puppets would hands-down be the best rock band album to date. and if guitarists want a treat then monsters and robots and enter the chicken by none other than the kfc headed one himself, buckethead!, tha would be the equivelant of buying a loaded candy store. (mommy, i want a hammer-on insanity pop.)

Wow. You guys summed each pack up perfectly. There's one downside to the Disturbed track pack which can also be seen as a positive; the guitar parts in Perfect Insanity and Indestructable are pretty hard compared to the other songs in the game. But Disturbed is a great band and at that price, who wouldn't want that pack.
